9/1/26 10:00 AM - Hill County Commissioners Court declared a local disaster, restricting outdoor burning and fireworks

This morning in Commissioners Court, the Hill County Judge declared a local disaster, and Commissioners Court ratified the declaration valid for 60 days unless rescinded. This declaration restricts outdoor burning in the unincorporated portions of the County and restricts the use of fireworks in Hill County. This decision was made based on the fact that our KBDI has reached 710, and we have responded to 35 grass fires since August 1st, with over 25 of those being in the last 14 days. While we do have rain in the forecast, it is not forecasted to be an appreciable amount to bring us out of drought conditions currently.

For purposes of this Order, “outdoor burning” includes, but is not limited to:

1. The burning of brush, grass, leaves, trees, limbs, trash, debris, rubbish, or other combustible material outdoors;
2. Campfires, bonfires, recreational fires, and other open fires; and
3. Fires contained within a barrel, hopper, pit, container, or other enclosure or semi-enclosure when used for the purpose of burning combustible material.

The prohibited fireworks include:

1. Bottle rockets and other skyrockets with sticks;
2. Missiles with fins;
3. Ground blooms; and
4. Other similar fireworks that, because of their design, operation, sparks, flame, or movement, present an extraordinary risk of igniting dry grass, vegetation, or other combustible material.

The Itasca Fire Department had a busy evening!

Medicals: 1
MVC crashes: 1
Grass Fires: 1
Vehicle Fires: 1
Burn Ban Violation: 1

Total: 5 calls and all within a very short amount of time. As always our volunteers work hard to answer the call spending time away from home, away from their families, missing events, meals, sleep, and work. We are very thankful for our hard working group of members!

PSA: it’s still very hot outside, the grass is still very dry, and Hill County is still under a Burn Ban. This means absolutely no outdoor burning is allowed, yes that means even in a barrel! It doesn’t take much to spark a massive wildfire. Stay hydrated, stay safe, stay aware!

8/26/26 at 3:21pm, the Itasca Fire Department was dispatched mutual aide to Blum VFD for a large Grass Fire on FM 2488. The fire is contained and crews are still on scene extinguishing hot spots.

Good afternoon, we are aware of the large amount of smoke beginning to blow into our area. There was a front blowing in from the West moving East that is pushing all of the smoke from the large wild fires west of here this direction. Please stay fire and weather aware and if you physically see flames call 911 but expect heavy smoke in the area for awhile from those fires out west.

Update 6:06pm - All fire units are clear

On 08/23/26 at 2:06pm, the Itasca Fire Department was dispatched to the area of CR 4434 for a smoke investigation. Shortly after crews were notified of a large Grass Fire in this area. Departments on scene include Itasca FD, Covington FD, Hillsboro FD, Milford FD, and Grandview FD.

As of 5:05pm crews remain on scene extinguishing hotspots and protecting the perimeter of the fire. The fire is currently under control.

Please keep all of our fellow first responders in your prayers during this blazing heat with temps near 110 and remember Hill County is under a burn ban. With these high temps, low humidity, and dry grass it doesn’t take much to spark up a large grass fire.

8/17: FIRE DANGER — Hill County, Texas

Outdoor burning is restricted in the unincorporated areas of Hill County. If you see smoke or flames, please call 911.

Very hot and predominantly dry conditions are expected across Hill County through the next 10 days. High temperatures will generally range from the upper 90s to around 105°F, with peak heat index values around 105–107°F. Afternoon relative humidity is expected to remain low, generally around 23–30%, contributing to continued drying of vegetation. Rain chances remain near 0%, with no significant rainfall currently indicated. Winds are expected to remain generally 5–10 mph, predominantly from the south to southwest, with occasional afternoon and evening gusts around 15–20 mph. The combination of prolonged triple-digit heat, low relative humidity, minimal rainfall, and periodic breezy conditions will continue to support elevated fire-weather concerns across Hill County.

Reminder!!!

Tomorrow (Monday 08/17/26) the Tornado Sirens will be tested at noon (12pm). This will be done every month on the third Monday of the month (same day as the city council meeting) at noon. Months if there is suspected severe weather in the area on testing day, the test will be postponed until the following month to avoid any confusion or false alarm.
