Dear Compatriots,

Unfortunately, after months of planning, the Captain Lester Beebee headstone dedication and wreath laying ceremony at the Old Burying Ground in Sag Harbor, NY, scheduled for this coming Sunday, May 24th, 2026 at 11 am, is canceled, due to inclement weather.
Consideration is being given to rescheduling the event next May, to coincide with the 250th anniversary celebrations of Meigs Raid. I will send out a notice when the new date is set.

Today marked the beginning of preservation work at the Colonel Josiah Smith and Howell Cemetery. Thanks to a generous grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, preservationists Zachary Studenroth and Joel Snodgrass began carefully restoring and stabilizing historic gravestones — including those of Colonel Josiah Smith, our chapter namesake, and members of his family.

The Colonel Josiah Smith Chapter, NSDAR, is honored to help preserve this important piece of Long Island and Revolutionary War history for future generations.❤️🤍💙🇺🇸

Memorial Day Proclamation

2026

Whereas, Memorial Day is a sacred occasion set aside by the American people to honor the brave men and women of the Armed Forces of the United States who gave their lives in defense of our nation; and

Whereas, from the fields of the American Revolution to the battlefields of modern conflicts around the globe, generations of Americans have answered the call to preserve liberty, protect self-government, and defend the principles upon which this Republic was founded; and

Whereas, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was established to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the Patriots who established American independence and secured the blessings of liberty for future generations; and

Whereas, we recognize that the freedoms we enjoy today have been preserved through the courage, sacrifice, and devotion of countless servicemen and servicewomen who placed duty above self; and

Whereas, Memorial Day serves not only as a time of remembrance, but also as a solemn reminder of our continuing responsibility to uphold the ideals of patriotism, constitutional government, and national unity;

Now, therefore, I, Michael J. Elston, President General of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, do hereby proclaim Memorial Day, May 25, 2026, as a day of remembrance and gratitude throughout our Society.

I call upon all compatriots, chapters, and state societies to pause in respectful reflection, to honor the memory of America’s fallen heroes, to participate in ceremonies and acts of patriotism within their communities, and to preserve for future generations the enduring principles for which these brave Americans gave their lives.

May we never forget their sacrifice and continue to honor their legacy through our service to our communities and nation.

Issued May 2026, in the 250th year of the independence of the United States.
