🇵🇸 Palestine: Reporting the News Is Becoming More Dangerous

For journalists in palestine, simply doing their job can mean facing detention, assault, threats or being stopped from reporting.

In August, new reports documented journalists being physically attacked, detained and prevented from covering events. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has also recorded 1,317 cases of detention or obstruction of journalists since 2023 through the first half of 2026.

Behind every number is a journalist trying to tell the world what is happening.

BNN Asia calls for journalists to be protected and allowed to work safely and independently.

🇯🇵 Japan: Strong Institutions, But Not Without Problems

Japan is often seen as one of Asia’s best governed countries, and there are good reasons for that.

Its institutions are stable, the rule of law is strong, corruption is relatively low, and its public services and infrastructure are widely respected.

But good governance is not about being perfect.

Japan’s highly structured bureaucracy can sometimes make change slow. Government decisions can happen through closed door consensus making transparency a concern. And with an aging population, economic pressures, and changing security challenges, Japan faces questions about whether its institutions can adapt quickly enough.

Japan’s experience shows an important lesson: stability is valuable, but governments also need the ability to change.

Good governance means not only having strong institutions, but making sure those institutions remain transparent, accountable, and responsive to the people.

BNN Asia believes good governance should serve people today while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow.

BNN Asia

🇦🇸 Asia-Pacific: 15 Journalists Killed

Fifteen journalists were killed across the Asia-Pacific in 2025. Four in India, three in Pakistan, three in the Philippines, two in Bangladesh, two in Afghanistan, and one in Nepal.

But these are not just numbers.

They were people who went to work to report, investigate, ask questions, and help others understand what was happening around them. They should not have had to lose their lives for telling the truth.

When will these killings and attacks end? How many more journalists have to die simply because they are trying to bring the truth to the public?

Journalism is not a crime. Reporting the truth should never be a death sentence.

BNN Asia stands with journalists across the region and calls for justice, accountability, and real protection for those who risk their lives to keep the public informed.

They should be able to do their job and return home safely.

🇵🇰 Pakistan: Who Owns the News We Read and Watch?

Pakistan has a vibrant media scene, but behind the many TV channels, newspapers and online platforms is a less visible reality: media ownership is highly concentrated.

Research found that the top 8 media owners controlled about 68% of audience share across TV, radio, print and online media.

Online, the concentration was even sharper. The top 4 owners accounted for about 93% of the audience share among the 10 leading news websites examined.

These numbers matter because media freedom is not only about having many outlets. It is also about who controls them, what other businesses they are connected to, and whether journalists can work independently.

People deserve to know who is behind the news they trust.

BNN Asia stands for transparency, independent journalism and the public’s right to reliable information.

BNN Asia

🇮🇳 India’s New Media: Who Really Owns It?

India has thousands of digital news publishers, but the number of outlets doesn't tell the whole story.

📱 3,500+ standalone and YouTube-based digital news publishers
🏢 An estimated 60–70% of major media groups have significant business interests outside media
📊 7 of 8 major media owners examined in a Media Ownership Monitor study operated across multiple media sectors

India's media landscape is growing rapidly, but ownership is increasingly connected to powerful business groups involved in industries such as telecom, energy, infrastructure, finance and entertainment.

The question isn't only 'how many news outlets exist'.

It's also: who owns them, what other businesses do they control, and how transparent is that ownership?

A diverse media landscape needs not only more voices, but genuinely independent ones.

BNN Asia stands for transparency, media independence and the public's right to know who is behind the news.

# # # 🇵🇰 Pakistan: Another Journalist Killed in Balochistan

A journalist was shot dead in Jaffarabad, Balochistan, on August 5. His brother was also injured in the attack. A suspect has been arrested, but the motive has not yet been confirmed.

This is part of a much bigger crisis. At least 42 journalists have been killed in Balochistan since 2008, making the region one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.

Journalists should not have to risk their lives simply for doing their jobs.

BNN Asia calls for a full, transparent investigation and for those responsible to be held accountable. Protecting journalists means protecting the public’s right to know.

BNN Asia

🇮🇳 India: When Copyright Claims Become a Tool to Silence Journalists

Journalists should be able to question those in power without fearing that their social media pages will simply disappear.

In Punjab, an investigation has raised concerns that copyright claims are being used against independent journalists and their Facebook content. One journalist reportedly received 19 copyright strikes before the page was removed.

Copyright protections are important, but they should never become a way to shut down critical reporting.

BNN Asia urges authorities and social media platforms to protect independent journalism and ensure that legal tools are not misused to silence journalists.

BNN Asia

🇰🇿 Kazakhstan: Pressure on Independent Media Intensifies

Kazakhstan’s crackdown on independent journalism is deepening ahead of the August 23 parliamentary election.

A former editor of independent outlet Orda has been sentenced to eight years in prison on charges including spreading false information, embezzlement, and illegal entrepreneurship. The sentence has been deferred for two years, but she also faces a five-year ban on media and public activities.

Since late July, several other journalists have faced arrests, prison sentences, investigations, or restrictions.

BNN Asia urges Kazakh authorities to stop using criminal proceedings and professional bans to silence independent journalism and to respect the right of journalists to report freely, especially during elections.

# # # 🇹🇼 Taiwan: Small Island, Strong Institutions

Taiwan may not always appear on lists of the world’s best-governed countries, but its record tells a different story.

Its government performs strongly in effectiveness, public services, transparency, and accountability. At the same time, Taiwan maintains space for a free press, civil liberties, public criticism, and peaceful protest.

Good governance is not just about getting things done. It is about doing so openly and being accountable to the people.

🇹🇼 Taiwan offers an important example of how effective government and democratic freedoms can exist side by side.

BNN Asia supports governance that serves people, protects rights, and welcomes scrutiny.

🌏 When Cooperation Goes Too Far

Sometimes, the biggest human rights concerns come from decisions that barely make the headlines.

BNN Asia is concerned by reports that Montagnard defenders were extradited to Vietnam, despite longstanding concerns over discrimination and persecution faced by the community.

There are also concerns over reported cooperation between Malaysia and Thailand in targeting a journalist.

Countries have every right to cooperate on security and law enforcement. But that cooperation should never become a tool to put vulnerable people back in danger or make it easier to pressure journalists across borders.

People who flee persecution deserve protection. Journalists deserve the freedom to do their work without fear, wherever they are.

For BNN Asia, regional cooperation should strengthen human rights, not weaken them.

Borders should not become a way around basic rights.
