MEET THE OPS TEAM | MARY BLOMQUIST
Public Information Officer

For Mary Blomquist, communication, education and service have been the threads connecting a career that has taken her from the classroom to crisis communications—and apparently all the way back to Space Camp in 1990.

A self-described lifelong “tech nerd,” Mary began her career as an educator before founding For the Love of Technology in 2018. Through her work in marketing and public relations for businesses, nonprofits and municipalities, she developed a particular passion for emergency response and crisis communication.

Her experience includes developing press releases, coordinating press conferences and media relations, creating public education campaigns and promotional materials, planning and executing fundraising efforts, and helping organizations communicate clearly and effectively when information matters most.

In 2025, Mary launched SeniorTECH, combining her backgrounds in technology and education to help older adults confidently and safely navigate an increasingly digital world.

Now, as Public Information Officer for Next Level Disaster Relief, Mary brings those experiences together with a passion for emergency preparedness and a heart for service. Her role includes sharing Next Level’s story, providing timely and accurate public information, supporting media relations and helping communities understand how they can better prepare before disaster strikes.

Mary is also a proud member of the Rotary Club of Madison-Mayodan, where Rotary’s commitment to “Service Above Self” closely reflects her own belief in giving back.

In her free time, Mary can usually be found gardening (you should ask her about her loofahs that she grows!), ice skating, enjoying lake life with her fiancé, Kris, traveling, and trying to keep up with her adventure-seeking parents.

And yes…that really is Mary at Space Camp in 1990. Some things apparently start early. 🤓

Two years ago, Hurricane Helene changed communities across Western North Carolina forever.

In the days and weeks that followed, we witnessed devastation that is difficult to put into words. Homes and businesses were destroyed. Roads and bridges disappeared. Families lost possessions, livelihoods and, most heartbreakingly, people they loved.

But we also witnessed something extraordinary.

We saw neighbors become first responders. Strangers become friends. Volunteers arrive ready to work. Communities come together to feed, shelter, comfort and care for one another.

Next Level Disaster Relief was honored to stand alongside those communities in the aftermath of Helene. Our team worked tirelessly to bring supplies, resources and support where they were needed, but the people of Western North Carolina taught us something about resilience, generosity and what it truly means to take care of your neighbors.

Today, two years later, the headlines have moved on.

But recovery has not.

There are still families rebuilding. Businesses trying to recover. Communities carrying the physical and emotional scars of what happened. There are still people who need help.

To our neighbors in Western North Carolina: we have not forgotten you.

We were there then.
We are here now.
And we will continue to stand beside you.

Because disaster response doesn’t end when the storm passes…and neither does our commitment to the communities we serve.

REMEMBERING HELENE | TWO YEARS LATER
Next Level Disaster Relief responded to Fairview and the Garren Creek community following Hurricane Helene in 2024.

Utilizing our response truck, we were the first group to access the Garren Creek community after devastating landslides and road washouts.

Tragically, two firefighters, from the same family, lost their lives in the act of attempting to save another family member in the landslides and floodwaters.

Accessing the community via a road rebuilt by the US Forest Service, we were able to provide a steady flow of hot meals to the community and the fire department who was also hosting the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue and Swiftwater Rescue Teams.

During our two week deployment to Buncombe County, NLDR assisted in the preparation and service of over 50,000 meals, receiving over 1 million pounds of donated food and supplies and cutting our way into 3 closed-off communities to deliver the supplies and perform welfare checks.

Two years ago, Hurricane Helene changed communities across Western North Carolina forever.

MEET THE OPS TEAM | SCOTT MARUCHEAU
Deputy Chief of Operations

For Scott Marucheau, service has been a lifelong calling—one that began in Scouting and eventually grew into more than 26 years in emergency services.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Scott began his career with Bravo Volunteer Ambulance Service in New York City, where he became Director of Safety. He joined the FDNY in 2003, advancing from EMT to Paramedic and Hazardous Materials Technician.

Scott also served with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the National Disaster Medical System, responding to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and participating in training exercises across the country. He later helped train the next generation of EMTs and paramedics as an instructor and coordinator.

In 2010, Scott joined the NYPD. He became a V***r Wake Canine Handler with the Critical Response Command before transferring to the Bomb Squad in 2020, where he served as a bomb technician, canine handler and Detective. His partners included two chocolate Labs, Paulie and Murray.

But Scott’s dedication to disaster response is about far more than his résumé.

During Katrina and Rita, Scott helped establish a field hospital in Louisiana. Amid overwhelming devastation, he remembers a woman living in a shelter baking responders a pie and a child giving him a small toy.

People who had lost nearly everything were still asking how they were doing.

“There is no higher calling than serving your fellow man.”

For Scott, those moments reinforced why this work matters: being there for people during their greatest time of need and knowing your service can make a difference.

Now retired and living in New York City with his wife, Kim, and their three daughters, Scott continues that lifetime of service with Next Level Disaster Relief.

BE NEXT LEVEL READY | Emergency Food Made Easy 🥞

If you watched our reel on Friday about building a Home Emergency Kit, you may have wondered: Okay…but what am I supposed to do about FOOD?

Here’s one easy option! 👆

Emergency meal kits like this one can often be found at bulk retailers like Costco and Sam’s Club. This particular kit cost less than $70 and contains enough food for approximately:

🥣 1 person for 30 days
🥣 2 people for 2 weeks
🥣 4 people for 1 week

Just store it with your emergency supplies and make sure you have the water and cooking/preparation supplies the meals require.

And remember: emergency preparedness doesn’t have to happen all at once. Start with the basics and add to your supplies over time.
