Two weeks ago, 15 South American migrants and asylum seekers deported from the United States to the Democratic Republic of Congo claimed to be facing pressure to return to their countries of origin where they fled persecution or torture. Some of the 15 told the Reuters news agency that since being deported, they’d been given no viable options other than going back to their home countries, and are currently stranded in Kinshasa, a city of 15 million people, with no money and no passports.

A federal judge has cleared the way for ICE officials to deport a Bolivian asylum-seeker from Iowa to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

THIS FRIDAY: Raiding the Heartland: An American Story of Deportation and Resistance.

Join us Friday, February 6, 2026, 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Iowa City Public Library for a timely conversation with Dr. William D. Lopez and Alejandra Escobar about Lopez’s new book Raiding the Heartland: An American Story of Deportation and Resistance.

Together we will look at how large-scale ICE raids impact small towns and rural communities, and the ways people respond with resilience, care, and collective action.

Presented with Iowa City Public Library in partnership with Prairie Lights Bookstore. Free to attend, refreshments provided, and streaming online.
