Project Cleanup is a program developed to support volunteer-led community cleanup efforts in Iowa City to help keep Iowa City clean and beautiful.

Kits include an instruction sheet, one pair of reusable gloves, and one 16-gallon orange plastic garbage bag.

Those interested in the program can stop by the Iowa City Public Library, Iowa City Senior Center, Mercer Park Aquatic Center, or City Hall’s Information Desk to pick up their cleanup kits. Residents of Johnson County and within the city limits of Kalona and Riverside can recycle most types of batteries at no cost at the following drop-off locations:

Thanks to a partnership with the Peoria Area Repair Cafe, you can fix things rather than pitch things.
Learn how to fix minor problems with small engines, gadgets and appliances, textiles, jewelry and glasses, tools and knives, and/or electronics, rather than throwing them away.
Free and open to all, but space is limited so registration is required.

Three cheers for reuse! Got broken stuff that needs new life? Come on down to Iowa City Repair Cafe this Saturday 8/8 from 11-3 at the Eastside Recycling Center!

At Donation Drive-Thru on July 19, over 12,900 pounds of goods were donated or recycled.

Thank you to all of our volunteers, donors, and partner organizations including Antelope Lending Library, Table to Table, Houses into Homes, Habitat for Humanity Iowa City ReStore, and Crowded Closet for their generous time and hard work to support local non-profit partners and reduce waste.

The Art and Craft Supplies Pop-up Events are all about saving quality, new or gently-used art, craft, school, and upcycling supplies from being wasted. Johnson County community members and local organizations can donate quality, new, or gently-used items they no longer need or pick up items at no cost that they have a use for! www.icgov.org/reduce

Iowa City Repair Cafe is hosting their next repair event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, at the Eastside Recycling Center's Environmental Education Center!

Available repair stations at this event will include: sewing and mending, furniture, computer and smartphone troubleshooting, electrical items such as lamps, and small engines like lawnmowers.

Recycling for electronic cords, cell phones, and batteries will be available at this event at no cost for residents of Johnson County, and within the city limits of Kalona and Riverside.
