40 years of history. One movement. A future we build together.

In 1986, residents of Roxbury and surrounding Boston neighborhoods organized around a bold vision of community self-determination: Mandela, Massachusetts.

Forty years later, we're revisiting that history, honoring the people who made the movement possible, and exploring what it means for the future of our communities.

This October and November, Redline Narratives and the Afrimerican Academy invite you to two special events as we build toward Mandela City 2028.

The Boston 250 Afrimerican Academy Summer Tours series has officially wrapped, and we could not be more grateful. 🙏🏾

From the Hyde Park Equity Tour Series to New Guinea Joy, Roadmap to a Beloved Community, the AAST Summer Showcase, Once Upon a Time in Nubian Square, and Happily Ever After in Nubian Square, this summer showed what community-led history looks and feels like. Our youth guides showed up every single weekend with knowledge, preparation, and a deep love for this city, and the community met them every step of the way.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible community partners. A heartfelt thank you to Hyde Park Main Streets, Southwest Boston CDC, The Pryde, Hyde Park Historical Society, Roundhead Brewing Company, Everyone250, Chantals Transportation, and the community historians, educators, youth leaders, and residents who brought their time, expertise, and passion to every stop along the way.

Thank you to every participant who joined us this summer. You are part of this story too.

Afrimerican Academy Summer Tours, in partnership with Livelikealocaltoursboston, presents Happily Ever After in Nubian Square on Saturday, August 8, as part of Boston 250.

This youth-led walking tour explores the cultural, civic, transit, and business history of Nubian Square and the surrounding Roxbury communities, engaging participants in stories of resilience, community activism, cultural preservation, and infrastructural change. Two time slots are available to accommodate different schedules.

Once Upon a Time in Nubian Square, the community came together, and the youth led the way. 🙌

Last Saturday, Afrimerican Academy Summer Tours wrapped up the AAST Summer Showcase at Shaw Library, BPL Roxbury before taking to the streets for the Once Upon a Time in Nubian Square walking tour. Youth guides brought the history, culture, transportation, and legacy of Nubian Square and the surrounding Roxbury communities to life for everyone who joined us.

Thank you to every participant, community supporter, and family member who came out to celebrate our youth and walk the history with us.

The series closes on Saturday, August 8 with Happily Ever After in Nubian Square, presented in partnership with Livelikealocaltoursboston. Two time slots are available, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Last Saturday, Afrimerican Academy Summer Tours brought the Roadmap to a Beloved Community tour and workshop to life at Way of the Cross Holy Church, exploring the intertwined histories of Boston's Jewish and African American communities along the Blue Hill Avenue corridor. Our youth scholars led the way and did not disappoint.

Join Afrimerican Academy Summer Tours on Saturday, August 1, for the AAST Summer Showcase, a public celebration of the work, growth, and achievements of the 2026 youth program participants, followed by the Once Upon a Time in Nubian Square walking tour by Live Like a Local Tours Boston.

The showcase will feature youth presentations and displays, community storytelling, summer project highlights, awards and recognitions, public history and cultural education, and interactive community engagement. Family members, community supporters, educators, and the public are all invited to celebrate our youth tour guides as they share their summer experiences exploring Boston’s cultural, infrastructural, and environmental history.

Following the showcase, participants are invited to join the Once Upon a Time in Nubian Square walking tour to explore the history, culture, transportation, and legacy of Nubian Square and the surrounding communities.

This event is part of Boston 250 and the Afrimerican Academy’s mission to nurture the next generation of cultural leaders.

Afrimerican Academy Summer Tours presents Roadmap to a Beloved Community on Saturday, July 25, as part of Boston 250.

This youth-led walking tour and workshop examines the intertwined histories of Boston’s Jewish and African American communities in Dorchester, with a focus on the Blue Hill Avenue corridor. Participants will explore how transportation, migration, religion, business, and urban development shaped community life, and engage with stories of resilience, cooperation, displacement, and cultural preservation.

Topics include Jewish and African American community history, Blue Hill Avenue corridor history, transit and trolley infrastructure, urban renewal, community institutions and activism, and cultural preservation.

The New Guinea Joy Tour did not disappoint. 🙌

Last Saturday, Afrimerican Academy Summer Tours took participants through the West End, North End, and the layered history of early African American Boston. Our youth guides led the way through historic streets, transit corridors, and the complex stories of cultural displacement and community resilience that shaped these neighborhoods.

One Boston. Many cultures. One incredible afternoon. 🌍

Last Saturday, the One Boston Multicultural Family Fair brought the community together at Ross Playground in Hyde Park for a celebration of food, music, art, and the people and traditions that make Boston thrive.

Thank you to every vendor, performer, volunteer, community organization, and family who came out and made this possible. A special thank you to our partners, TresHeart Foundation, Inc., and Immigrants Lead Boston, for their support.

The culture was felt. The community showed up. We can't wait to do it again.
