A Marshall University student ran dance marathon raising money to support Pediatric Oncology at Hoops Family Children's Hospital in the battle against childhood cancer.

We wrapped up Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by dropping off everything from our donation drive to the Cancer Center. We had snacks, toys, drinks, and some more PortPals for them!

Everything donated came from our collection locations at St. Mary’s School of Nursing and the Marshall University School of Pharmacy.

The month may be over, but we continue to help support the kiddos going through the toughest battles. These kids face something most people could never even fathom going through 365 days a year. Please keep the children, their families, their care teams and their friends in your thoughts and prayers.

If you missed our drive, don’t worry! The pediatric oncology clinic at Edwards Cancer Center accepts donations year round. Toys, snacks, drinks, etc. they can never have too many!! What began as a lesson in the classroom is becoming a new source of comfort for pediatric oncology patients at Hoops Family Children’s Hospital. 💛

Braden Cotton, a third-semester nursing student at St. Mary’s School of Nursing and Director of Operations for Dance Thunder, is helping to launch PortPals, a pilot project inspired by learning about medical play in his nursing class.

“When I learned about medical play in class, I immediately began thinking about how it could support children undergoing cancer treatment,” Cotton said.

The initial pilot will provide five stuffed animals equipped with a toy mediport and mock Huber needle to new oncology patients after mediport placement. Each PortPal will belong to one child, giving them an opportunity to become more familiar with their device through medical play while providing a lasting source of comfort throughout treatment.

“What began as a lesson in my nursing classroom is now becoming something tangible for children and families facing incredibly difficult circumstances,” Cotton said.

Through the support of Dance Thunder and the team at Hoops, PortPals is taking the first step from a classroom-inspired idea to a program designed to make a meaningful difference for pediatric cancer patients and their families. 🎗️💛

💚 Today, Dance Thunder recognizes World Lymphoma Awareness Day 💜

About 15% of all cancers diagnosed in children and teens are lymphomas, making Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma together the third most common type of childhood cancer. Approximately 1,900 children and teens are diagnosed with lymphoma in the United States each year, and more than 80 distinct subtypes of the disease are known. These numbers show the reach of lymphoma, but they cannot measure the fear of a diagnosis, the exhaustion of treatment, the heartbreak of relapse, or the courage it takes to begin again.

Today, we honor those receiving treatment, celebrate survivors and those in remission, remember those we have lost, and stand beside every family whose life has been changed by lymphoma. Every story is different. Every story matters. Every child deserves to be seen, supported, and surrounded by hope.

Today, Dance Thunder proudly recognizes Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses’ Day and the nurses who stand beside children and families through some of life’s most difficult moments.

Their work extends far beyond medications, procedures, and treatment plans. They ease fear, explain the unfamiliar, celebrate every milestone, comfort families through uncertainty, and help children continue to feel like children even inside hospital walls.

To our nursing friends at Hoops Family Children’s Hospital and everywhere, thank you for bringing extraordinary skill, patience, strength, and compassion to every bedside. The difference you make cannot always be measured, but it is felt by every child and family whose lives you touch.

🧡 Today, orange joins gold as Dance Thunder recognizes World Leukemia Day 🧡

Leukemia represents 25.7% of all new childhood cancer cases in the United States, meaning more than one in every four new cancer diagnoses among children and adolescents is leukemia.

Today, we honor those receiving treatment, celebrate survivors, remember those who have lost their battle, and recognize the loved ones and healthcare professionals who walk beside them. Awareness cannot erase a diagnosis, but it can help ensure that no child or family carries it unseen.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

We set this month aside to honor the strength of children facing cancer and the families who stand beside them through every appointment, treatment, setback, and victory. No child should have to trade pieces of their childhood for hospital rooms and treatment plans, but for far too many families, that is their reality.

Throughout our Month of Gold, Dance Thunder is proud to stand with the children and families receiving cancer care at Hoops Family Children’s Hospital and remind them that their community sees them, supports them, and cares deeply about their journey.

This month, we go gold for their courage, their hope, and every childhood affected by cancer.
