The Hudson River Shakespeare Company is a Community Theater based in Hudson Falls, drawing talent and audience from Washington, Warren, and Saratoga Counties.

Our Philosophy
We believe the quality of a performance experience for both the audience and the performers is dependent on the material being performed and the sincerity with which it is presented. To that end we concentrate on classic literature, which has proven its beauty and truth by maintaining its human appeal through the ages. And to better express our sincerity, we maintain a clean, simple, and minimal production style. We also believe that audience members should not have to pay a lot for an entertaining theatrical experience, and that performers should not have to pay anything. The simplicity of our production style not only places emphasis on the language and action of each production, but minimizes production expenses. Of course, we are also dependent on our generous advertisers and our fabulous patrons. All this makes it possible for us to remain committed to a $10 ticket price, continue a high frequency of production, and offer many differing performance opportunities throughout the year with no fee or other financial commitment from the performers. And all this makes the work we do accessible to everyone.

Bruce Van Guilder was very young when he was born. His first experience with theater was in seventh grade, helping backstage for the Queensbury High School production of The Man of LaMancha. at the urging of his school english class teacher. He was often a class clown in school, with a love of music and playing guitar. He enjoyed watching live theater, but was always a spectator. It wasn’t until his son was auditioning for a play with the Hudson River Shakespeare Company’s production of Hamlet, when his son said Dad, YOU should audition”. That happened, and Bruce was cast in two roles: the ghost of Hamlet’s father, and the Gravedigger. It was the beginning of a second family, as the HRSC people were very welcoming and supportive. The first cast party was the premiere of many happy singalongs with Bruce’s guitar and vocals. Since then, Bruce has accompanied and performed many songs, some were Shakespeare lyrics set to music that he wrote, and some were original lyrics and music written specifically for the shows they were used in. One of his earliest was a duet titled “Love at First Sight”. Bruce has performed many HRSC productions, including title roles. His favorite role was playing Puck, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which his character provided the music for his band of fairies, and Greater Tuna, in which he played several parts, male, female, and Yippee the dog.

Debby VanGuilder was first introduced to HRSC the summer of 2001, when her son began acting with them. Prior to that her only experience was in high school Drama Club - helping with set building and makeup. It didn't take long to become involved, first helping with concessions, costumes, and working into stage manager. She has done many shows since, from Shakespeare to Greater Tuna, and sound effects for radio shows. Most of her "free time" is spent gardening, cooking, + taking care of her 4 kitties.
