How do we determine a horse’s path at Horses’ Haven- Companion or Riding?

In addition to basic standard of care being brought up to date (vaccines, dental, de worming), and a medical exam, we do a full lameness exam to ensure we are placing our horses into homes that they are suited for the job expected of them.

A full lameness exam, per the AAEP (American Academy of Equine Practitioners), includes the following:

Static exam
-examining the horse standing, palpating limbs/tendons/muscles for pain or inflammation
-hoof testers applied to all four feet
-palpating back

Dynamic exam
-walking and trotting in a straight line
-walking, trotting, cantering both directions on a lunge line
-flexion tests

Diagnostics
-including radiograph, ultrasounds, nerve blocks

After the exam, treatments at Horse’s Haven that are often tried to see if the lameness can be managed, can include:

- NSAID trial (recommended based on age and severity)
-joint injections/systemic joint therapies/orthobiologics
-physical therapy

It takes time, a lameness exam itself averages 90 minutes, and hopefully an understanding of why a horse may be noted as *under medical evaluation* for a period of time on our website.

Our top priority is that we are placing each horse into a long term home, that only asks what that horse is capable of 💞

Horses’ Haven is private property. Our role in law enforcement cases is clear- house and care for equines at the request of the County for the duration of the investigation. That’s it, that’s our role.

To protect the privacy, safety, and well-being of all horses and volunteers who are not involved in this matter, our policy has been, and remains, that all members of the press are not permitted on the property.

At this time, Horses’ Haven will not be providing any statement or additional information at this time.

We appreciate your understanding and respect for our policy.

🦄 Who Needs a Unicorn in Their Pasture? 🦄

Meet Serafina — a stunning grey Arabian mare with an elegant presence and the kind of beauty that turns heads wherever she goes.

Her grooms absolutely adore her, and she has made wonderful progress since arriving. Serafina is still learning to trust and gain confidence, so she’ll thrive with a patient, consistent person who is willing to continue helping her blossom. She can be a little sensitive to new or unexpected things, and she is head shy, so a gentle approach is important. Trailering is also something she’ll continue to work on.

Serafina has a reported history of being ridden, though she has not yet been evaluated under saddle. She can be adopted as a companion.

She may need a little extra time and understanding, but this beautiful girl has a kind heart and so much to offer.

🎃 Open House Update! 🎃

Due to a recent large intake and the necessary biosecurity measures that must follow, Open House has been POSTPONED until October 24.

🍂 The exciting news is that this gives us the opportunity to do something a little different! Open House will still be fun and family-friendly, but with a Halloween/Fall twist! In addition to our traditional activities (open farm tours, raffle baskets, games, food, etc), we will be adding in costume contests, trick or treating, and more while hopefully enjoying cooler weather and slightly fuzzier fall horses. We can't wait! 🍂

We could not continue to care for each of our unique and special horses without the tremendous support our community has shown to us. We are looking forward to celebrating another year of rescue and adoptions with you all on October 24!
