🍂 Volunteer Highlight 🍂
“My name is Diana. I’ve been volunteering at Horses’ Haven for a long time. Barb Baker, our founder, was in charge when I originally began volunteering. Barb could be intimidating, but if a volunteer wanted to learn, she was a great teacher. I learned so much form her. When I began, there were few lights and water had to be brought to the animals. Look at us now! So many people worked hard to make things better.
Over the years, I’ve been in contact with many animals, including a spoiled pig. He was the only pig I ever saw jumping in the air!
One of the many loves of my life was Dillon. This was around 2006. He was a grumpy old horse (and a very sloppy eater!) who came into the barn at night. He never walked through the gate; it was always a tremendous leap. At the time, there was a group of children with special needs who came to see Dillon. Old Grumpy loved those kids.
Gabby Goat loved to sneak up behind us and would buckle our knees for fun. I still miss her.
Sadly, I had to stop [volunteering] for a few years to take care of a family member. Coming back was like going home.
I’ve met so many volunteers, many still at Horses’ Haven. Our staff is the best. I wish Barb could see us now.”
