MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND HSCF - Paul McCutchen

For the past four years, this HSCF committee member has been learning, hunting, and giving back alongside an incredible community of conservationists and outdoor enthusiasts.

He now serves on the Grants and Live Auction Committees, helping support the work that makes HSCF’s mission possible.

His love of the outdoors started with his grandfather, and if you ask about his favorite species to hunt, the answer is simple: dove. Why? You don't have to stay still or be quiet, and there's a lot more shooting.

One of his most memorable hunting moments? Watching his wife take a 53" kudu.

What keeps him involved is seeing firsthand the impact HSCF has, from helping kids experience their first hunts to supporting species protection, research, and conservation efforts in Texas and around the world.

That’s HSCF: people, passion, conservation, and a whole lot of hunting.

Dan L Duncan scholarship recipient, Halli Lovell, update!

"Taken at one of my sampling sites in the Marathon Basin. For my project, I am measuring shrub canopy cover to compare to satellite imagery. This will help us determine if satellites can be used to predict brush cover and encroachment in areas occupied by pronghorn.
Today, I completed 10 plots (and 8 points within each plot = 80 points), and I will be spending time in Hudspeth County next week and on the Marfa Plateau the following week to complete the rest of my field work for my thesis."

Texas Archery-only Seasons Open TODAY!

Archery-only seasons open for whitetailed-deer, mule deer and wild turkey. Excellent wild turkey recruitment was recorded in 2023, 2024 and 2025, so you can expect to see a lot of mature gobblers across the Rio Grande wild turkey range in Texas this fall.

Archery-Only Season Dates:
Wild Turkey: Oct. 3 - Nov. 6, 2026
White-Tailed Deer: Oct. 3 - Nov. 6, 2026
Mule Deer – Panhandle: Oct. 3 - Nov. 20, 2026;
All Others: Oct. 3 - Nov. 26, 2026
