In 2011, a small group of people were deeply struck by the wide-spread injustice of sex trafficking filling their city. This group firmly believed that prayer was the most important and most effective response. So, a monthly meeting was organized and opened to the public. The prayer meeting grew rapidly as more and more people joined the movement. Soon, they realized that more had to be done to in

crease awareness of the issue. Additionally, the group felt compelled to engage in direct outreach to those being exploited. As a result, Elijah Rising was founded in 2012 as a prayer gathering focused on ending sex trafficking. In an effort to raise the awareness of local citizens, Elijah Rising began hosting Awareness Van Tours to inform the public of the realities of modern-day slavery and that sex trafficking is happening throughout the city. In 2013, Elijah Rising negotiated the closure of a brothel (Angela’s Day Spa) and converted it into its former headquarters. In 2014, Elijah Rising launched the Museum of Modern-Day Slavery—one of the nation’s few museums dedicated to exposing the brutal realities of sex trafficking and exploitation. The museum allows the public to explore what it looks like inside a brothel, while displaying a collection of artifacts and information from the fieldwork conducted by Elijah Rising staff and volunteers. Since its inception, Elijah Rising has reached, on average, more than 700 sex trafficking victims each year through direct outreach to women in illicit massage parlors, streets where trafficking and prostitution is commonplace, cantina brothels, truck stops, and women sold through online portals. As women increasingly exit the oppressive sex industry, Elijah Rising’s mission has expanded to include long-term, trauma informed, residential, restorative care. In 2019, the 84-acre Elijah Rising Restoration Campus officially opened, providing personalized, transitional care for adult women who are survivors of sex trafficking and need support services in order to reintegrate into society. As Houston continues to gain national attention for the issue of sex trafficking, Elijah Rising continues to combat the sex trade by materializing solutions, which reverse the effects of its injustice in society and prevent the proliferation of victims.

Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

You’ve driven past it. You just didn’t know.
Houston ranks #1 in the nation for trafficking. This isn’t happening somewhere else. It’s right here, all across our own city.

We believe awareness is only the first step. So we reach into the darkest places. We walk with women out of exploitation and into healing.

Like the woman in Matthew 9 who reached through the crowd believing a single touch would be enough, we believe reaching still changes everything.

This September, we invite you to turn your awareness into action. Join us for Dare to Reach: Healing Awaits, our annual gala supporting survivor care in Houston.

We are thrilled to share this survivor story that highlights our partnership with Rescue America™️ ! We could not agree more- one of the biggest wins during the World Cup was our strengthened partnership and combined efforts to provide wholistic, seamless care for the women we serve.

At one of the illicit businesses we visited during Intervention, the house mom was glad to see the team. One young woman asked us to come meet her seven-month-old baby.

We prayed over the mother and the child right there in the parking lot. The baby’s father came over, guarded, still carrying questions the church had shut down years ago. We talked with him and offered him a place where those questions would be welcome.

We invited both of them to church, and he said he’d come if his girlfriend came. The two of them admitted they don’t want to be in this life, that they just need money. We gave them resources and real people who could help them.

This July, we’re sharing Stories of Freedom: real testimonies from real people showing what happens when someone doesn’t look away. When you become a monthly donor, you can be part of every story to come.

During our World Cup Intervention nights, one of the managers of a club our team visited was upset that we were disrupting his club. He said that he doesn’t send his girls to dance in our church pews, so we shouldn’t send our church ladies to disrupt his club.

We told him that we would love to see any of the women working there in our churches, and it made the ladies so happy to hear us say that.

That’s a wrap on the 2026 Abolition Summit! We loved getting to host it in Houston and have so many familiar faces join us. Jackie Pullinger shared so much wisdom, and we’re still thinking about the ways she challenged us. An unforgettable experience!

At one of our Intervention nights during the World Cup, a Spanish-speaking volunteer was on the team and offered to pray in Spanish for women working at one of the clubs they visited.

The women were so happy to have someone who could fluently speak their language. They lined up for prayer and cried over feeling seen, loved, and valued. For women far from family in other countries, being fully understood became its own form of freedom.

Feeling seen changes everything. When you become a monthly donor, you can be part of every story to come.
