Over the past 7 weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to work directly with community members in Kashmere Gardens and Trinity Gardens to learn more about green stormwater infrastructure advocacy, design, and implementation through Bayou City Waterkeeper’s GSI Design Lab.

This Tuesday, our cohort members will be sharing reflections on their experience in the program through a community panel and presentation, and we invite our friends and partners who are interested to join us.

Join us at Skyler Smith's WET:LAND Learning Series at the Art Club at POST HTX on May 22. In an interactive lecture, Alenka Cardenas and Kristen Schlemmer of will share more about wetlands’ role in Houston, what it means when they are destroyed, and how nature-based flood infrastructure can help us recover what has been lost—all set against a soundscape backdrop composed by environmental scientist and artist Mashal Awais.

Such an incredible feeling when folks come together to learn about green infrastructure with community. 🌿

This morning’s site visit at Keith-Wiess Park was incredible. Huge thank you to Harris County Flood Control District and Harris County Precinct 2 for joining Bayou City Waterkeeper’s Kashmere Gardens Design Lab cohort and staff to walk through what green infrastructure can actually look like in practice.

Take the time to check out Keith Wiess Park if you want to see nature based solutions in action.

✨ Free admission for the first 100 attendees
✨ Some snacks and refreshments will be provided
✨ Registration preferred

As we work to repair systemic harms, we also recognize that water is a site for healing, joy, celebration, reflection, and growth. Join us as we step into regeneration. Link to registration in our bio.

🚧Right now, critical capacity projects for the areas with the worst overflows are still in the design phase, and the City's reporting is too vague to verify progress. We’re watching and taking action.

We took these findings to City Council this week. We shared our independent engineer’s findings and demanded better data and faster results for our communities.

What you can do:
📍Report sewage spills to 311 (every report is evidence!)

📍Continue to follow the story and follow the finances.
Houston made a promise to its residents. It's time to hold them to it. ⚖️💧

The results are in, and the scorecard is… COMPLICATED. 📋📉

We hired an independent engineer 🕵️ to dig into five years of Houston’s sewer reports. While there’s progress on pipe inspections and manhole sensors, "emergency" fixes are lagging, and critical neighborhood projects are still stuck in the design phase—five years later.
❗But the most concerning part? The data itself is "severely lacking." Without specific completion dates, how can we hold the City accountable?
