Friends of Down Syndrome

Friends of Down Syndrome Post-high school education program for our adults with Down syndrome to both maintain as well as increase academic skills. to 3 p.m.

Friends of Down Syndrome is a Houston-based nonprofit providing support for adults with Down syndrome. Our main program is the Down Syndrome Academy, a post-high school education program for our adults to both maintain as well as increase academic skills. These targeted skills include reading, math, science, counting/managing money, and computer skills. Additional skills addressed include time ma

nagement, planning, vocational skills, social skills and music. Participants attend classes five days a week from 9 a.m. Friends of Down Syndrome strives to promote awareness of the contributions that adults with Down syndrome can make in our community. In addition, we want to offer a social network for them. We offer a social club for all teens and adults with Down syndrome in the Houston area, called the T21 Social Club. It is open to anyone, not just Down Syndrome Academy students.

We love collaborating with other nonprofits, especially those serving the same amazing community we do! 💙💛

We recently lent our T-shirt making station to GiGi’s Playhouse, giving their participants the chance to be hands-on in making shirts for their upcoming Pickleball Tournament! 👕🏓

We’re so lucky to live in Houston, where there are so many wonderful Down syndrome resources available to our families. We’re proud to work together and support one another!

Another great trip to Ogle School! ✂️💇‍♀️💙

Our participants always look forward to these visit, not just for a little pampering, but for the experience of sitting in the chair, choosing what they want, communicating with their stylist, and enjoying some well-deserved self-care!

A huge thank you to the students and staff at Ogle School for always being so welcoming, patient, and kind to our Friends of Down Syndrome participants. We love getting out into our community and building relationships like these! 💙💛

We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

Friday was Wear Your School Colors Day, and our participants did NOT disappoint! 💙💛

Just look at this sea of FODS logos! We’re always proud to rep Friends of Down Syndrome, but these shirts represent so much more than our program. They represent the skills, hard work, and hands-on experience that go into making each one.

At FODS, our participants are involved in creating the shirts you see us wearing, turning a fun school spirit day into a chance to show off what they can do!

Want to support their work?

👕 Love one of these designs? Stop by the FODS Gift Shop!

🎨 Need custom shirts made? Send us a message and let us make them for you!

📦 Love a surprise? Join our T-21 T-Shirt Subscription Box and get a new FODS-made shirt each month! Visit our website and look for the T-21 Subscription Box.

So many ways to support FODS, our participants, and the skills they’re building every day! 💙💛

💗 Looking for an unforgettable way to cross the finish line?

Our friends at Ainsley’s Angels are looking for more Angel Riders for the 2026 Twilight 5K & Celebration of Inclusion!

Several members of our community already participate with Ainsley’s Angels, and we’d love to see even more of our Friends join them. Angel Riders are paired with athlete pushers and get to experience the excitement of the race from a racing chariot, at ZERO cost to the rider!

📅 Saturday, October 3, 2026
📍 Tomball Event Center
🌙 Evening 5K

Angel Riders receive a race experience, finisher’s medal and T-shirt, plus a meal afterward, and most importantly, a whole lot of cheering as they cross that finish line!

Registration is FREE for Angel Riders. When registering, select “Participation as Angel Rider (Zero Dollars).”

Please register early so Ainsley’s Angels has plenty of time to prepare the appropriate equipment for each rider.

Grocery store trips don’t have to be scary. 👻🛒

With the right supports, grocery shopping can become a fun way to build confidence and independence!

At Friends of Down Syndrome, we use visual grocery lists, and each participant is responsible for:
🧐 Finding the item
🛒 Adding it to the basket
💳 Scanning it at checkout

Want to try it at home? You can:
📱 Save photos of the items you’re shopping for on your phone.
🖨️ Print and laminate pictures of items you buy regularly.
📍 Use your grocery store’s app, it’ll even tell you what aisle each item is on!

We’ve been practicing at our local Sam’s Club for so long that many of our participants know exactly where everything is… especially the café, where everyone confidently orders for themselves! 🍕🌭💙

A little preparation can turn a “scary” grocery trip into an opportunity to build independence, confidence, and life skills.

Yesterday, our participant Alan had the opportunity to take part in Preparing to Fly Together, a guided airport rehearsal hosted by Partners Resource Network in partnership with Emirates! ✈️💙

Alan got to experience the airport process firsthand, including checking in, going through security, navigating the airport, and learning what to expect when traveling by air. What a great way to build confidence and independence before a future trip!

We also learned about some great resources we wanted to share with our families. TSA Cares offers additional assistance for travelers with disabilities or medical conditions, and many airports also have sensory rooms or sensory-friendly spaces. When traveling, be sure to check whether there is one located in your terminal.

A big thank you to Partners Resource Network and Emirates for giving Alan this opportunity and for helping make air travel a little more accessible and less intimidating for individuals with disabilities. We’re so glad he got to represent Friends of Down Syndrome! 💙✈️
