*New Footage: Border wall construction has already begun in South Texas, lands of the Esto'k Gna* causing environmental destruction of critical wildlife corridors and refuges. Only 5% of the native riparian, floodplain, and wetland habitats remain along the lower Rio Grande and its local tributaries. The border wall is planned to further destroy the remaining habitat by impacting over 13,000 acres of wildlife refuge tracts in Hidalgo and Starr county alone. This week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have begun construction on approximately 13 miles of the Rio Grande Valley Levee Wall System project in Hidalgo County, Texas adjacent to the National Butterfly Center and Bentsen State Park. While the Fiscal Year 2019 CBP appropriation has stated the National Butterfly Center is saved from this round of construction, Trump’s emergency declaration has put this into question.
