Hobart Firefighters Local 1641 PROUDLY endorses Mayor Josh Huddlestun for re-election.

Mayor Huddlestun has made public safety a priority through action. He has addressed the needs of a fire department that went overlooked for too long. Working alongside Local 1641 he has made tremendous progress to strengthen our department and to plan responsibly for its future.

His record to date includes:

• Creating six additional firefighter positions, bringing our line staffing to its highest level in department history.

• Supporting organized labor and fair contracts.

• Investing in fire station renovations at House 1, House 2, and House 4. Renovations include: paint, complete kitchen remodels, appliances, and epoxy flooring throughout.
In addition, House 1 also had the apparatus bay be completely repainted, drain was repaired, and epoxy flooring will be installed in the apparatus bay next month!

• New emergency back-up generators for House 1, House 2, and House 3.

• New fitness equipment at each station

• Equipment upgrades for our ambulances such as: Cardiac Monitors, Power Cots, Stair-chairs, & Power loaders.

•Equipment upgrades for fire apparatus such as: new AMKUS extrication equipment on Truck 1 and hand tools for all rigs.

•Rope rescue equipment such as: new rope, new harnesses, new and advanced hardware

• New drone and vehicle for the Drone Team

• New handheld sonar, masks, dry suits, and underwater communications for the Dive Team

• Forcible entry training prop

• Supporting a new 100-foot Aerial Tower, a new 107-foot Quint, and two new ambulances.

• Approving annual advanced cancer screenings for firefighters.

These investments support the firefighters answering the call and the residents and businesses depending on us. Adequate staffing, dependable equipment, and firefighter health are essential to protecting Hobart.

We deeply appreciate both what Mayor Huddlestun has accomplished and his commitment to making that progress responsible and sustainable. His willingness to do what’s right for the City of Hobart and to work with us has helped build a stronger foundation for the future of the Hobart Fire Department.

🚓🚒 NATIONAL FIRST RESPONDERS DAY

Today, we recognize the men and women of the Police Department, Fire Department and all first responders who serve our community.

Whether answering an emergency call, educating residents, visiting local schools or participating in community events, our first responders do more than protect Hobart. They are neighbors, mentors and familiar faces who step up when our community needs them most.

Today's first responders carry on the work of generations who served Hobart before them. We also remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

To all who have served and those who continue to answer the call, thank you.

At approximately 8:27 p.m., the Hobart Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 400 block of North Lake Park Avenue. Fire was located in a third-floor apartment.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and contained it to one apartment. During the incident, a victim was located in a bedroom and rescued from the apartment. The victim was transported to an area hospital, where a physician pronounced the victim deceased after prolonged resuscitation attempts. The coroner is still determining the cause of death.

One other occupant was transported to an area hospital for a medical emergency unrelated to the fire.

The fire caused water damage to apartments on the lower level and smoke damage to apartments on the upper level. Utilities to the apartment complex have been shut off as a safety precaution. Arrangements are underway to assist displaced families.

The fire remains under investigation by Hobart Fire Department investigators working with the State Fire Marshal.

The Hobart Fire Department thanks the mutual aid agencies that assisted tonight. We also thank the American Red Cross for sending its crisis team to help residents connect with available resources, and the apartment complex management team for helping arrange temporary housing for some residents.

Our hearts are heavy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s loved ones and everyone affected by this incident.

🚒 TRAINING BURN | ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE

The Hobart Fire Department will conduct a controlled structure burn at the Sapper’s property on Sunday, Oct. 18, as part of a scheduled training exercise.

To accommodate training operations and ensure public safety, State Road 51 will be closed between Laura Lane and 11th Place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents and motorists should anticipate smoke and increased emergency vehicle activity in the area during the exercise. Please use alternate routes and avoid the immediate training area.

We appreciate the community's patience and cooperation as our firefighters complete this important training.
