ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: MATTHEW DAVIS / ARTICULATED ARTWORKS

What do the Winter Olympics, Disney, U2, the Atlanta Falcons’ retractable-roof stadium, Burning Man, and Leonardo da Vinci have in common?

Matthew Davis.

Founder, lead engineer, designer, and professional tinkerer behind Articulated Artworks, Matthew has spent 25+ years figuring out how to make ambitious ideas move, spin, breathe, and occasionally defy expectations. He’s collaborated with artists including James Turrell, Chuck Hoberman, and Marco Cochrane, taught kinetic design at Columbia University, and built six large-scale Burning Man installations.

And now he’s bringing back Disc-Go-Sphere, his 2016 kinetic sculpture inspired by da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.

But this time, you’re not just looking at the art. You’re driving it!

A belated birthday shoutout to the wonderfully creative Alex Maxwell! 🎂

Artist. Educator. Curator. Gallery shop owner. Printmaker. Collage wizard. All-around champion of making things a little more interesting.

From the High Bridge Paint Out, to Art Around High Bridge, to Grounds for Art from year one, Alex has been part of our creative community from the beginning. And while you may know him for his elaborate, eye-catching collages, Alex is so much more than his own artwork. He’s an artist’s artist and a curator of creatives, constantly connecting people, ideas and inspiration.

And this year, he’s bringing the making to Grounds for Art!

Stop by Alex’s space on September 12 for printmaking demos and hands-on time with a real printing press.

There’s a pretty special story happening right next door to Grounds for Art Fest (TISCO- Taylor-Warton Iron and Steel Co.)

If you are in the back of the TISCO property and you make your way across the walking bridge on the Steelworkers Trail towards Solitude House, you will pass through an intriguing industrial yard filled with iron and steel. Take a moment to really look around. This is where industry and nature meet, and where a small town’s industrial legacy is still very much alive.

Originally known as Union Forge, this site opened in 1742, making iron here since Colonial times. Today, Forged Solutions continues that legacy, manufacturing industrial metal forgings right here in High Bridge.

We’re incredibly grateful to Forged Solutions, our Gold Sponsor, for being such a great partner to Grounds for Art Fest. And this year, they’re going the extra mile by providing additional overflow parking right next door for our festival guests!

Darren Auck has turned a lifelong passion for drawing into an
extraordinary career as a comic book artist, illustrator, writer, and teacher.

A graduate and longtime instructor at the Joe Kubert School, Darren has worked with Marvel and DC Comics and brought countless characters and stories to life over the years. Inspired by folklore, monsters, and imagination, he continues to create original works featuring cryptids and creatures of all kinds.

Visit Darren at Grounds for Art Fest, where he will host a booth with live art demonstrations exploring the fascinating world of cryptids, legendary creatures, and comic book art.
