Good fabric scissors should almost disappear into your hand.

We’re sharing 5 signs of high-quality fabric scissors that every sewist, quilter, and maker should know about.

One of the biggest indicators? Hollow-ground blades. Unlike flat blades, hollow-ground blades curve inward slightly along the inside surface. This allows the scissors to reduce friction while cutting because the blades only meet at one precise point as they close.

Combined with a strong pivot, balanced weight, and comfortable handles, these details completely change how fabric scissors perform over time. Good scissors aren’t just sharper. They’re intentionally engineered to support the way sewists actually work.

You’ve seen how we make them, but here’s how we hide them. When you have an illusion back or something semi see-through, regular white elastic is too contrasting and will show underneath- not a good look!

The trick to blending and hiding these seatbelts or waist stays is to have them made in an elastic that is closest to the skin tone of the client. The elastic therefore blends I with the skin and is invisible on the outside.

Caveat, this trick is best on illusion that has something going one- think lace appliqué, beading, etc.- basically something that helps trick the eye. This doesn’t work as well on clean, perfectly sheer backs that have nothing on top. What you can do though, is ask your seamstress to channel a ribbon or a more delicate elastic just below the waist and on the skirt. It’s not AS sturdy as one a little tighter, but it absolutely helps.

We custom-fit these internal elastic belts (we call them seatbelts for fun but yes sewists, it’s a waist stay 😉) to sit exactly where you need the most tension, allowing the gown to “float” on your body while staying perfectly in place. No tugging and no slipping. 💅🏼
