Italian Heritage Club of Albemarle Plantation Created & maintained by Angela DeCandia Ermi

The Italian Heritage Club of Albemarle Plantation is a community organization of those residents who have an interest in learning about and/or sharing Italian customs, traditions, & language. Our goal is to embrace the many contributions that both Italians & Italian Americans have made in the areas of music, theatre, literature, science, art, medicine, architecture, culinary arts, etc.

At our March 10 meeting tonight, we celebrated La Festa di San Giuseppe. This event occurs in Italy every year on March 19 to honor St. Joseph, the legal father of Jesus. It is the equivalent of Father’s Day as we know it in the U.S. For this reason, a table was set up with photos of members’ fathers as a tribute to the wonderful men in our lives. As per the Italian tradition for this feast, members prepared ‘simple’ yet delicious meals many of which comply with the season of Lent. Desserts were plentiful and enjoyed by all.

Our first meeting of 2026 was FAVOLOSA!!!!!!!
Our topic for the evening was “Making Pasta”.
Thanks to members Susan Marino, Anna Iannacito, Charlie Pencinger, Victoria Butler, Lauren Calenda, Kim Mascolo, & Tom Ponte who cooperatively: organized the evening event; set up the Community Center room for SIXTY PEOPLE; made a video presentation of actually making the pasta (cavatelli & fettucini) ahead of time; delivered a visual discussion of pasta types & sauces; planned the dinner menu; shopped for groceries; made 4 different sauces (ragu with traditional meatballs, with turkey meatballs, with sausage, & simply marinara); tossed a wonderful salad; provided expertly made bread; & included a variety of cookies/brownies for dessert. With great efficiency, the food was carefully platted at the serving tables for each guest to select their choice of the menu items & then return to sit with their ‘amici’ for a sumptuous meal!!!!
Lots of conversation, fun, & friendship……

Our December meeting is always one of merriment, friendship, and Italian culture. This afternoon, IHC members celebrated Natale together by sharing homemade biscotti, singing carols in both English & Italian, playing Italian-themed Trivia, and swapping presents from Secret Santas! Most importantly, we all had another fun experience to add to our many memories of this club created 10 years ago!
Our recurring hosts, Kim & Ed Mascolo, opened their beautiful home to us after much thoughtful preparation. The Italian style cookies were plentiful & DELIZIOSI!
🎄BUON NATALE A TUTTI VOI e FELICE ANNO NUOVO!!!!! 🇮🇹

Nov. 11, 2025
Tonight, we acknowledged Veterans Day before beginning our November meeting.
This was followed by a brief discussion of the number of U.S. citizens who claim Italian heritage by state & per capita.
Introductions were made of new members to the club, namely Gina & Jerry Mathers; and Lucia & Mark Cramer.
Dinner items contributed by our members were extraordinary, as usual.
All seemed to enjoy an evening of friendship and ethnic pride! ❤️ 🇮🇹

October is” Italian Heritage Month”, so at this month’s meeting, members Charlene & Mike Finamore shared their recent adventures in southern Italy. Mike gave us an interesting pictorial tour of points of interest from Naples on the Mediterranean side to Bari on the Adriatic side.
GRAZIE to the Finamores for enlightening us with history (& humor) about the land of our forefathers. 🇮🇹
