I laid with you on that cold flight. Over your casket. The entire time. 7 hours in the C130. Cold. Loud. Constant noise. Earplugs in. Grateful nobody could hear me sobbing. Talking to you.

I didn’t know this photo was taken. I was just with you. I didn’t want to leave you now that I was physically with you again.

Your dignified transfer. “Tyler’s Last Flight.”

That morning at JBLM, before we took off, the clouds parted. A beam of light broke through and settled over us. I felt you there.

Your Astoria guys were there. Your brothers. The honor guard carried you with such care and flew with us. Steady. Respectful. I’m so grateful for the way they honored you and carried all of us through it.

Air Station Kodiak flew us. Their crew. Their aircraft.

Kodiak was your dream. The life we talked about constantly. The adventures, the frontier, fishing, exploring. Our future kids in tiny boots standing in streams with you.

And the work. The gnarliest cases. The challenge. The grit. No excuses. You wanted all of it. And you wanted me there with you.

Of course it was Kodiak that carried you. That didn’t feel random.

I didn’t want to leave your side. At one point I stepped into the cockpit to thank the crew. They showed me their thermal cameras, how you find people in SAR.

And then… cows. Just laying out in a field. And later, beaver lodges. Our things. Our jokes. Our stops on the side of the road. It felt like you were sending me signs. I laughed through tears.

Before we landed, I changed into my black dress and asked the pilot to pin your wings on me. I just wanted to carry you.

When we landed, the honor guard carried you forward with precision and care. I watched. I broke. I cried for your sacrifice, for ours.

The aviation community stood in flight suits. Exactly how you would have wanted it. Not formal. Not stiff. Just you.

Then the sky filled. Three MH-65s in formation overhead. It was beautiful. It was dignified. It was BADASS.

Today marks 3 weeks. My heart is still shattered.
Tyler, I’m broken. Honoring you is the only way I know how to keep breathing. But you were there. I felt you. I know you loved it. I hope I made you proud.

I love you. All. Of. It.

Wednesday, March 25 is Medal of Honor Day.

Over 40,000,000 have served our nation throughout its history.
Just 3,533 have received the Medal of Honor.
And today, only 64 Recipients are living among us.

As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Medal of Honor reflects the very best of our country -- courage, sacrifice, service, and a steadfast commitment to protecting freedom.

On National Medal of Honor Day, March 25, we honor the legacy of the Medal and those who have received it.

Join the mission of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society to protect, preserve, and share these stories for generations to come. https://www.cmohs.org/foundation/give
