๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Happy Flag Day! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Today we celebrate the adoption of the American flag on June 14, 1777, and reflect on the values of freedom, unity, service, and sacrifice that our flag represents.

Flag Day is also a reminder that when an American flag becomes faded, tattered, or no longer fit for display, it should be retired with dignity and respect.

This past Thursday, the Henniker Area Rotary Club welcomed David Currier of the Davis-Woodman-Durgin American Legion Post 78. Dave joined us to accept approximately 200 retired American flags collected through the Rotary Flag Project. Over time, Rotary volunteers identified and replaced flags that had become weathered from proudly flying throughout our community.

During his presentation, Dave shared how the American Legion ensures these flags are respectfully retired and spoke about the many ways Post 78 serves our community. We learned about the Legion's efforts to preserve veterans' memorials, care for the Sgt. Russell Durgin Memorial Bridge, and partner with local Scout organizations in honoring those who have served our nation.

Dave also shared a unique project undertaken by Post 78 this year. To commemorate the 250th Anniversary of America's Independence, the Legion repurposed 300 of the 578 flags that had been replaced on veterans' graves in Henniker cemeteries. Members arranged the flags at Woodman's Veteran's Park in the shape of the number 250, creating a patriotic tribute that can best be appreciated from above. The display will remain in place through the July 4, 2026 celebration, after which the flags will be respectfully retired.

In addition, Dave discussed the American Legion's historic role in advocating for the GI Bill following World War II and how those educational benefits helped returning veterans pursue higher education, including at New England College, which was founded in 1946 to serve veterans returning home from the war.

The public is invited to attend the American Legion's Flag Retirement Ceremony on Tuesday, June 16, at 6:00 p.m. at Henniker Brewing Company, where these flags and others collected throughout the community will be respectfully retired.

Thank you to David Currier and the members of Post 78 for their dedication to our veterans, our community, and the respectful stewardship of our nation's flag.

Today was the Goffstown Rotary Car Show and our very own Sarah J. Locke represented in the Jeep category and took 2nd place! Help us in congratulating Sarah. This was the 13th year of this event and if you've never been you absolutely should go and support. Several rotary clubs come together to make this happen.

What an inspiring meeting today! A huge thank you to fellow rotarian and local author Sarah J. Locke for joining the Henniker Area Rotary as our guest speaker.

Sarah shared her powerful, personal story of coming out later in life, facing a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) diagnosis, and how starting her nonprofit, Locke's Promise, gave a profound new purpose to her life. She highlighted the incredible impact Locke's Promise is making for Granite Staters living with MSโ€”providing not just essential financial support, but also life-changing mobility aids that truly give folks their freedom back.

It was a treat to have Sarah signing copies of her memoir, *Living Out Loud*, after the presentation. If you missed out on getting one today, you can pick up your copy on Amazon here: https://a.co/d/09BsSsB8

We are already looking forward to the next book in her series, which is set to be published in late 2027!

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Memorial Day is more than the start of summer, it is a day of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for those who gave their lives in service to our nation and the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As Rotarians, we are reminded that โ€œService Above Selfโ€ is a value lived not only through community service, but through courage, sacrifice, and commitment to something greater than ourselves.

This weekend, more than 20 dedicated Rotarians came together to honor our veterans and fallen heroes by proudly placing over 400 American flags throughout Henniker and Hillsboro.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Each flag serves as a symbol of remembrance, gratitude, and respect for those who gave everything for our freedom.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the fallen heroes, their families, all who continue to serve, and the volunteers who help keep their memory alive in our communities.

May we never forget their sacrifice.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Wishing everyone a meaningful and peaceful Memorial Day.

Our guest speaker this morning was Kat Downey from NH Hunger Solutions. What an informative session. Have you heard of SNAP or WIC? The message was clear, the charitable food system need help, we need SNAP.

NH is 39th in the nation for SNAP participation.
32% of SNAP eligible people enrolled and SNAP supports 1063 retailers in NH.

But who uses SNAP?
Veterans, older adults, households with kids, those with physical disability...and put of them all 77% are actively working and still need support. DYK that the average SNAP benefit is $5.49 per meal. (Itโ€™s supplemental help)

SNAP is funded by the federal and state. 50% is funded by NH. There is a bill out asking states to pay 75%...they need advocacy to help keep the federal government involved as much as possible because our state's budget cant handle it all.

The NH Hunger Solutions helps in 4 areas, policy & advocacy, education & awareness, children nutrition and food access coalition.

You can learn things like this first hand and find out how to help by joining rotary! We are involved and supporting organizations like this.

Today we had the pleasure of having our local winner for the 4-way Speech Contest, Jadelyn B. a junior from HDHS. She is interested in going to college for general neurology.

Her speech was delivered once again this morning and we have to say, our next generation is strong and determined. ๐Ÿ’ชโœจ๏ธโš™๏ธ
