Every worker deserves to come home after their shift.

But on Friday, September 25, 2026, Elvin Hernandez, a Department of Transportation Maintainer 3 Sweeper Operator, was working along I-95, cleaning debris from the roadway, when he was struck and killed by a driver reportedly speeding and driving erratically while under the influence of drugs.

Elvin was doing his job helping keep Connecticut's roads safe for the hundreds of thousands of people who travel them every day. Elvin deserved to go home that Friday night.

Instead, his family, friends, coworkers and union brothers and sisters are mourning a life taken far too soon.

In August, consumer prices rose 3.4& compared with a year earlier. Gasoline jumped nearly 4 percent in a single month, and the Federal Reserve raised interest rates in September for the first time in more than three years.

Today our Retiree and Administrative Services Director, Bernadette Conway, was celebrated by Chapter 401 of our Retiree Council for her 20 years of service to our Union!

Everyday Bernadette brings sunshine and positivity to our union hall and over the next month we’re excited to be able to celebrate all the marks she’s left on our local.

Today our 2,500 paraeducators from across the state were duly represented by our Para Council President, Cynthia Ross-Zweig, and our Cheshire Chapter President, Tiffany Velardi, at a press conference with Office of Governor Ned Lamont and Comptroller Sean Scanlon on the Paraeducator Health Subsidy Program our paras have been championing for years.

The work our paraeducators do is critical and our education community relies on their continued dedication and expertise to ensure success for our students. Thank you for all you do!

Our Council 400 retirees celebrated in style today at their annual picnic! We’re always grateful to have our busy elected officials stop by, say hi and answer some questions. Thank you to Senator Richard Blumenthal, Office of Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, and Rep. Bill Heffernan for all coming by.

It’s a special day at the Union Hall when we get to celebrate the birthday of our Council 400 Membership Co-Chair, Tom Welch. Tom has signed up THOUSANDS of state retirees to CSEA over the years as co-chair. He comes in every single week to call retirees and let them know what’s at stake and how to stand together with a collective voice to preserve our 5 pillars of retirement: Social Security, Medicare, State Retiree Health, Pension and Medicaid/ Long term care.
