Welcome back to the Popps Studio Residency I make stuff

After spending time at Popps this spring Josue is back in preparation for an upcoming show at M Contemporary Art . We are excited to have his energy back in the studio and cant wait to see what great paintings emerge.

Josue Bessiake is a first-generation Ivorian-American painter working across media. Influenced by his itinerant upbringing, his work is in direct conversation with his environment in a process involving repurposed material, destruction, and repair.

Bessiake has presented work at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the New York Academy of Art, and the National Gallery of The Bahamas, and is a two-time recipient of a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. Recent exhibitions include Dorf Gallery (Austin, TX), the Institute for Public Architecture (New York, NY), and Presa House Gallery (San Antonio, TX).

Bessiake is a recent alumnus of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture whose work has been supported by residencies at the Ballinglen Museum of Art, the Edward F. Albee Foundation, and the Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency.

Pleas join us for an Open studio BBQ on Thursday April 23rd. From 6-8pm and meet our current Artist in Residence and learn more about her ongoing series of acrylic ink drawings, Portraits of Home, which engages with past and present residents of the cities of Detroit and Highland Park to document their homes and neighborhoods through collaboration and exchange.

Whitney is looking for participation from past and present residents of Detroit and Highland Park to add their past or present homes to the project and to potentially add their personal/communal histories to a new oral history component in development. Participants who contribute an address to the project will receive a signed, editioned giclee art print of the finished work. Join us at Popps Packing, 12138 Saint Aubin St., Hamtramck, MI
