VA - BLOC Building Empowered Communities! We focus on three building BLOCs: Voter Engagement, Civic Engagement Membership is free.

Virginia Black Leadership Organizing Collaborative, VA-BLOC, launched on Thursday, September 1, 2016. We are a project of New Virginia Majority and are committed to building empowered communities by building Black civic engagement in the Hampton Roads area. Specifically focused on Newport News and Hampton, we use a community asset based model to work with citizens to enhance their involvement in t

heir local community. Our three building BLOCs are:
(1) Voter Engagement - Voter Registration, Voter Education, and Voter Mobilization
(2) Civic Engagement - Based in our top six issues, we help organize community members to advocate for change at all levels of government by providing training and support. (3) Leadership Development - We can help you use what you've learned to make positive change in your community! We help enhance your leadership skills with workshops and learning opportunities with exposure to new and exciting experiences! If you're interested in joining VA BLOC as a Builder of Empowered Communities, please contact us today. All we need is your commitment and passion for change. Also, we are looking to partner with local organizations that will help in these areas. Potential collaborations can be formed around voter registration, restoration of rights requests, voter education, voter mobilization, leadership development, civics education, grassroots organizing around particular issues, solutions-oriented events and town halls, and leadership development for all ages. If your organization is interested in partnering, please contact Marcia Price at 757-751-9081 or [email protected]

The 2nd Cohort of the "Safe Space Work Place" Program by Ketchmore Kids kicks-off at 10am on September 12th, & they are now accepting enrollment for teens and young adults ages 15-25 years old.

Not every teen/young adult is ready to go straight into the workforce or into a typical workforce development program. The "Safe Space Work Place" Program bridges that gap.

Before participants can successfully complete a job application, interview for a position, or keep a job, they may need to develop some very basic skills.

The program provides support with things like:
- Reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension
- Understanding instructions and following directions
- Completing forms, applications, and other written materials
- Basic math and everyday problem-solving
- Using a phone, email, and other basic technology needed for work

They also help with basic workforce development tasks like:
- Personal hygiene, grooming, and appropriate dress
- Punctuality, responsibility, and workplace expectations
- Preventing and handling workplace conflict
- Exploring careers with employers, professionals, and entrepreneurs
- Finding employment and receiving support after getting hired

marks 71 years since Emmett Till was tragically taken away from his loved ones. Today we ask you to take a pause to honor Emmett Till. Emmett’s story lives on and carries a legacy to us all to continue fighting against injustices, brutality, and discrimination. Continue to tell the story of and advocate for change.

More than a quarter of a million voting-age Virginians last year were barred from the polls. They were once convicted of a felony, served their time and re-entered society – but not completely.

Virginia is one of three states that does not automatically restore voting rights for free citizens with a felony conviction. The commonwealth requires men and women to petition the governor to regain that right.

A federal court ruled this year that prohibition is illegal. In November, Virginians will consider a constitutional amendment to enshrine the automatic restoration of rights.
