You may notice some careful work happening today at the old High’s Ice Cream building in Phoebus.
After recent evaluation, the structure was determined to be too far gone due to extensive termite damage, and the owner has made the difficult decision to move forward with demolition.
Immediately after the historic advertisement was revealed last Saturday during the first phase of demo, the Phoebus Partnership worked directly with the owner to secure stewardship of the advertisement.
Today, we’ll be carefully removing, preserving, and documenting the historic advertisement from the side of the building so that a part of its story isn’t lost. The nonprofit has set a goal of restoring the advertisement and, in time, making it publicly accessible again.
I’ll share a fuller look at the history of this building, and the people who built their livelihoods inside its walls, in the coming days. While it’s never easy to see parts of our Main Street change, there is something meaningful in knowing that a major piece of its story will be preserved and shared for future generations.
