The History behind Memorial Day:

Memorial Day is specifically meant to pay tribute to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in defense of the country.

The holiday was originally established as "Decoration Day" in 1868 following the American Civil War. It was a time for communities to gather and decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with spring flowers and flags.

It became an official federal holiday in 1971, with the observance permanently moved to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend.
