Summer is in full swing here at Deep Portage! If you've got a great photo that you've taken here so far this summer, submit it to our photo competition for a chance to win. If you haven't made it out yet this summer, make sure to take advantage of the warm weather!

A reminder about the contest:
Winners will receive a Deep Portage Nalgene water bottle.
Submitted photos will be displayed in the Resources Heritage Center.
The photo should fit one or more of the following categories:
-Deep Portage programming
-Animal
-Plants
-Deep Portage scenery

Looking for something fun to do this summer? 🌲☀️

Deep Portage Learning Center is offering a variety of public programs for all ages, including canoeing, birding, archery, climbing wall adventures, guided bog hikes, campfire cooking, nature crafts, and more!

Whether you're a lifelong outdoor enthusiast or simply looking for a new family adventure, these hands-on experiences are a great way to explore the natural beauty of northern Minnesota.

Many programs are available through free-will donations, but registration is recommended as space is limited.

Rare bird alert!!! There were 2 Least bitterns at DP yesterday evening! Both were callng at each other in the beaver pond wetland just off County Road 46, along the north side. In the video you can hear them calling, making that low cooing/gutteral sound. It almost sounds like a loud frog. Only a handful of Least bitterns have been ever been reported in Cass County as their range is further south in MN. This is the first record at Deep Portage.

They can easily be visually misindentified as green herons or an American bittern, both which are common at Deep Portage but easily distinguished by calls. We have more ID info in the comments!

Between the snow flakes, heat waves, and high winds spring has exploded at Deep Portage. The birding is incredible right now, nearly 20 species of warblers spotted around Bass Pond yesterday (~50 species total) and wildflower blooms like crazy. The songbird migration and spring blooms are just starting and will only get better, come out and check it out!
