Want to come explore Deep Portage as part of a public program this summer? This is your last chance! Here's the opportunity to polish your canoeing skills while exploring Bass Pond or Big Deep Lake, and learn about what's living in the pond (or just make memories catching frogs with your kids).
Visit our website to register.

TUESDAY: Go for a spin in our canoes! You’re welcome to bring fishing gear, or join our staff for a paddle around Bass Pond and even across the portage to Big Deep Lake.
Ages: 8 and above if using Deep Portage lifejackets, younger must bring their own.
Cost: Free will donation
Bring: Water bottle, sunscreen

THURSDAY: Get suited up in our rubber boots (or bring your own) and we’ll head to the pond to learn about aquatic life as we see what we can find.
Ages: All for the morning session, afternoon is focused on ages 3-6
Bring: Water bottle, sunscreen, towel in case of tumbles

What is Deep Portage? We are an environmental learning center set on 6,307 acres of public land in between Hackensack, Longville, and Pine River. During the school year we stay busy with overnight school groups from across the state who come to stay and learn about nature. In the summer we have camps, primarily hunter education based, as well as programs for the public.

Foghorn? Fourth born? Four corn? Just like the fun we have with folks mixing up the name of camp, we had a blast with our final group of Forkhorn 1 campers. These guys and gals arrived Sunday and leave today with their firearm safety certification. They did their book learning in the morning, and spent the afternoons and evenings canoeing, fishing, surviving in the woods, shooting at the range, and so much more. Thanks for a great end to a great summer!

We also have a archery class on Thursday, a great chance to do something fun with your family or friends before the summer is over.

TUESDAY: As a conservation reserve, we’re all about being eco-friendly. One of those ways is to slow fast fashion, so we’re having a clothing swap! Take a quick hike on a trail or up to the tower while our staff get everything ready, and then the shop is open at 3. Each ticket can buy one item! Remaining items will be donated locally.

THURSDAY: Unlock your inner Robin Hood! Learn to shoot our compound and recurve bows at our archery range.
Ages: 10 and up
Cost: Free will donation

A huge thank you to the HLACF (Hackensack Lakes Area Community Foundation) for sponsoring a class set of handheld microscopes! We're so excited to be able to enrich our programming by making those little natural details accessible to all. One of our famous classes is water canaries, and these microscopes will help our students see the aquatic macroinvertebrates up close and personal. Check out the eardrum on that frog!

Hello Muddah, hello Faddah
Here I am at (Upland Bird and Forkhorn 1 All Girls)
Camp is very entertaining
I'm gonna be the best at aiming

Despite the heat, we're staying cool in the lake
And for dessert we got yummy cake
I've learned which birds are a migrator
The pond doesn't have an alligator (just a monster muskie!)
One more sleep, two more sleeps, and we'll see you
But for now, I'm having fun in a canoe!
