IF YOU VISITED THE FOOD SHELF ON MONDAY OR WEDNESDAY THIS WEEK YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO COVID-19. Get tested!!
Edited to add: Call BRIAN HALOS at 281-2644 to let him know you visited the food shelf. Was the worker wearing his mask when in contact with you? Was he wearing gloves? You have come into contact with someone exposed to COVID and have now been exposed yourself.

In the fall of 2019, I heard that the food shelf in Crookston had closed its’ doors and left nearly 300 citizens per month without food. Immediately, I knew something must be done. I called around to see what a person could do about this and was directed toward Care and Share. Upon inquiring, I was informed that they were hiring for a kitchen manager, so I applied right away. In November, I happily interviewed for and accepted the position.
Once I got into my second week, I noticed the large amount of food we had that was either being thrown away or not used. I spoke with our director about putting together boxes of food for community members and was given the green light right away. This program was named “Boxes of Hope” and it took off with a bang! Word spread rather quickly and we served a few hundred people within that first month.
After running the program for a few weeks I realized that the ebb and flow of donations would prove difficult in providing consistent amounts of food. I met with the Crookston city administrator and was pointed in the direction of the food bank. The idea was put out there that I could start a real food shelf and it blew me away!
Many phone calls and meetings later I put together a proposal for the Care and Share Board of Directors for the December board meeting. Although I had only been an employee for a short amount of time; they acted with such grace kindness and allowed me to continue my work. I made more food boxes, worked closely with the food bank staff, and met with community leaders to see how we could make this happen. Thankfully, at the January board meeting I received the answer I had been hoping for.... I was going to start a food shelf out of Care and Share!
Countless hours have been put in to make this dream of mine a reality. I am anxiously awaiting our opening day and cannot wait to serve our first family and grow within my new role as food shelf director.
