What a week! We hosted seventh graders from Crested Butte and Gunnison out at the ranch, and it was an absolute blast. Huge thanks to our incredible partners who taught them about land management, water science, native plants, and more, and to our AmeriCorps Education Coordinator, .simko for putting it all together. πŸŒ±πŸ’§

We love to see environmental education in action, especially when it means getting our hands dirty and running around.

Our amazing partners included:

Our fall modules kicked off last weekend with two day in the field learning all about beavers and how to manage for beaver coexistence. Paul Planer from Range Works talked about the importance of three core concepts:

1. Humility
2. A holistic landscape view
3. Centering relationships

When these three concepts guide our work, we are empowered to make thoughtful decisions that account for the needs of all involved. Thank you to everyone who made this weekend such a success! Go beavers!

We were stoked to host incoming Western Colorado University students at the ranch last week as part of their orientation! We learned about willows and weeds and students collected over 1,000 willow stakes that will be used in a restoration project up Red Creek in early September.

Thank you to all the students who came out and gave us their time and energy! We are excited to see what this year has in store for you.

We're in our construction era! πŸ’ͺ So excited to be building three new hoop houses that will soon be home to native plants.

Where do the native plants that we cultivate go? So glad you asked! They are used on restoration projects across the Gunnison Valley. This year we have willows, cottonwoods and other riparian plants going to 3 different restoration sites!

Three months of River Watch!

We have been out in May, June, and July to sample Tomichi Creek for River Watch, and we have never seen water levels this low. The current drought the West is experiencing is unprecedented and is impacting every facet of our work out at the ranch. It's years like this one that make the work we're doing to advance restoration and regenerative practices more important than ever.

Ecosystem restoration is one of the most important front lines of defense against climate change. By restoring degraded habitats through revegetation, we are actively contributing to local cooling and improved water retention in our soils, which is key to building climate resilience into our local landscapes.
