Today, we commemorate Juneteenth and celebrate the freedom that came late for some of our fellow Americans. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in the United States learned of their freedom in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

In the years that followed, Black Texans carried the tradition of celebrating Juneteenth with them as they moved to other communities across the country, transforming the day from a local observance into a national celebration of freedom, resilience, and hope. In 2021, Juneteenth became the 11th federal holiday.

At GJR, we believe every person deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. Today, we recognize the enduring values of freedom, dignity, and equal opportunity that continue to strengthen our communities.

This past Thursday, our Adventure Based Counseling program was excited to welcome The Salvation Army WPA Youth Camp Allegheny’s leadership team for a dynamic teambuilding session. As part of Camp Allegheny’s week-long training, this experience helped prepare staff and camp counselors for a memorable summer of outdoor adventures with young campers from across Western PA. The session focused on building leadership skills, accountability, and trust, fostering a team mindset that will stay with these young leaders long after this summer.

Our greenhouse at GJR in PA recently transformed into a vibrant 3D canvas, giving our youth a unique opportunity to showcase their creativity. Their artwork not only brightens the space but also helps keep the greenhouse cooler for the seedlings in the summer. Through this project, youth explored outdoor painting techniques, learned about the best paints for the job, and expressed their affection for the greenhouse garden program in the most hands-on way.
