🚒 A Great Day of Training at Gretna Fire & Rescue!
Yesterday, 23 Gretna Fire & Rescue members came together to assist with the ongoing EMT class at GFR, helping our students work through a full day of OB, trauma, extrication, and hands-on practical training.
The morning started with OB emergencies and delivering babies, followed by two vehicle extrication scenarios and traction-splinting practice. After lunch, students rotated through multiple trauma assessment stations, giving them the opportunity to sharpen their assessment skills and prepare for their upcoming final practical examination.
Students then worked through long-bone splinting and the proper utilization of fracture packs, followed by a bleeding-control station where they practiced tourniquet application and learned how to improvise a tourniquet using cravats.
The day finished late this afternoon with a full vehicle extrication using a car donated by AMA! The students absolutely loved getting their hands on the extrication tools and learning firsthand about vehicle stabilization, extrication techniques, tool operation, and safe patient removal from vehicles.
A HUGE thank you to the 23 GFR members who volunteered their time today to assist with instruction and training. Your willingness to give up your Saturday to help train the next generation of EMTs is what makes this organization special.
Thank you also to Pittsylvania County Public Safety for allowing us to borrow the OB mannequin for today’s training, and a special thank-you to AMA for donating the vehicle that allowed our students to get valuable hands-on extrication experience.
And finally, thank you to our EMT students for staying focused, working hard, and remaining dedicated to bettering yourselves and the agencies you represent. These students are putting in the work to become better EMTs and better providers for their communities.
Days like today are a perfect example of what Gretna Fire & Rescue is all about: training, teamwork, commitment, and serving our community.
The members who came out today care deeply about Gretna Fire & Rescue, the future of EMS, and keeping the citizens of our community safe.
Proud of our members. Proud of our students. Proud of GFR. 🚒❤️💙
