Many who are familiar with popular fiction have heard of Kristin Hannah. "Firefly Lane" (2008) and later "The Nightingale" (2015) both skyrocketed in popularity and have maintained their hold as commercial successes over many years. "Firefly" became a popular Netflix series in 2021 and "Nightingale" is probably the novel for which Hannah is most well known, followed closely by "The Women" (2024).

As an avid reader, I recommend other book lovers try to insulate themselves from ubiquitous, fawning reviews of popular titles that jump to the top of bestseller lists and immediately become go-to books for book clubs everywhere. It's rare for a novel to live up to that kind of hype, which was the problem I had when I read Hannah's "The Women" (reviewed in this column in September 2024). I admit it is happening again with Allen Levi's "Theo of Golden," a good book, but not one I'd classify as "the best ever," as so many readers had, by the time I read it. But I digress.

Adiska Family Dental is family owned and operated. We value our patient relationships providing gentle, compassionate dental care. We have modern equipment you would expect from a big city dentist, with personalized care and convenience of your hometown.

We are proud to be a part of this community and we make it a point to be active in the lives of those that support us. We actively support local schools, churches, and community events throughout the year.

Adiska Family Dental is very proud to offer FREE custom-fit athletic mouthguards to students within our local school district region. We always encourage the use of custom-fit athletic mouthguards for any contact sport, such as football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and wrestling. Off-the-rack "boil-and-bite" mouthguards offer little protection from a sports injury, causing your child to be at risk for permanent damage or a costly repair.

“Dear Gabbie” is written with the simple hope of bringing a few smiles to your day and is not meant to replace the advice of professionals…especially your mom!

Dear Gabbie:

I was behind a driver towing a wide load. Why did he need to go 20 miles under the speed limit? … Why have drivers stopped using their turn signals? … Why are drivers looking at their phones when they should be watching the road?

Signed,

Question Congestion

Dear Question Congestion,

First, I should explain, the questions above came from three different submissions. Yes, dear readers, if ever we were to pick a topic that generates the most "pet peeves," it would have to be driving.

I am of the opinion that, in general, driving peeves require the patience of both the peeved and the peever! By that I mean, if you are someone who regularly forgets, or just flat out refuses, to use your turn signal, well, you need to do something about that.

“Dear Gabbie” is written with the simple hope of bringing a few smiles to your day and is not meant to replace the advice of professionals…especially your

Esther Louise Kapp, of Stockbridge, MI, passed away on June 5, 2026 at the age 91. She was born March 1, 1935, to Francis and Lucille (Huston) Maulbetsch.

Esther graduated from Ann Arbor High School class of 1953. She married Richard Walter Kapp in Ann Arbor on June 27, 1953.

She grew up on a farm in rural Washtenaw County. As a child she loved to work outside with her dad and brother, Lewis, tending the farm animals and helping to rebuild tractor engines during the winter months.

In the summer months, she worked in the fields where they grew vegetables that they took to the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. She continued her love of gardening and attending the Farmers Market for over 50 years. As the years progressed she expanded her passion for farming to include flowers and vegetables grown in her greenhouses.

In her later years, she took up baking and attending craft shows and markets with her baked goods, where she was famous for her soft pretzels and dinner rolls.
