Nellie Maxwell takes a back seat to Betty Crocker, beginning in 1926

This month, I decided to circle back to check out 100-year-old recipes from the October editions of the weekly Stockbridge Sun-Times. After all, those early 1900 Sun-Times recipes is where this column’s roots began. Well, I hope you’re sitting down for this news—it looks like, in October 1926, Betty Crocker started to edge out Nellie Maxwell in the world of syndicated food columnists! I guess I knew it would happen sooner or later, but I’m not sure I’m ready to say goodbye to Nellie.

I have to admit, though, Betty Crocker is like a great-aunt to me. My siblings and I were weaned on her recipes; the “Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book” was our mom’s go-to in the kitchen. I decided to use that special cookbook and look for something seasonal to use up some apples I had in the house. So this month's recipe features Betty Crocker’s Quick Apple Cake from her Picture Cook Book.

Dear Gabbie:

Community Facebook groups can be great, especially when they’re used to post yard sales or giveaway items, offer assistance to neighbors, or to share fun activities going on in the area. A local Stockbridge area Facebook group often posts helpful information like that, but lately it seems like it’s been overrun with people judging others who weren’t born and raised in the area. Commenters often make derogatory remarks about area residents they assume have moved here from Ann Arbor or other communities outside of the immediate Stockbridge area. What’s up with that?

Kristina Lyke for Judge, Michigan 44th Circuit Court

Kristina Lyke knows the area.
Lyke was raised in Pinckney and now resides in Fowlerville. She is a member of the Greater Brighton Chamber of Commerce (includes Pinckney, Hell, Lakeland, Hamburg and Brighton) and Howell Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Lyke has volunteered and sponsored several local charities in Livingston County. Lyke believes it’s imperative to know the people in order to serve them.

Experience matters.
Lyke is the only candidate with 20 years of trial experience in criminal, family, civil, and property law—including bench and jury trials—and who has fought for constitutional and fundamental rights of several individuals along with serving veterans. Throughout Lyke’s career, she has been locally and nationally recognized with numerous awards.

Mail-in voting has already begun for the Nov. 3, 2026, midterm elections in Michigan, with early-in-person voting and election-day voting to follow. Check out your municipality here to find out about voting locations and what’s on the ballot locally.

This article only covers local voting details and initiatives. Every citizen in Michigan will have federal and state legislators; state attorney general, state board of education; U-M regents, MSU trustees, and WSU governors; judges; and two state proposals to vote on.

To see actual ballot content for any municipality in Michigan, go to the Michigan Voter Information Center (an online site): mvic.sos.state.mi.us/PublicBallot/Index.

Regarding manual postmarking of ballots: If you choose to return your ballot by mail through the U.S. Postal Service, you are allowed to ask the person at the counter to manually postmark (hand-cancel) the ballot when they accept custody of the ballot.

Transparency is a two-way street; raise kids to be civically engaged

As the digital world speeds up, our children learn instant gratification as the norm. Yet the gears of government turn much slower. The gap widens between how things get done and what youth have the patience to learn. It’s never been more important for youth to understand how decisions that shape their daily lives actually get made.

Until my forties, I dismissed local politics as, well, boring. My public school education never required me to attend a single local meeting, much less learn Robert’s Rules of Order for making a motion, seconding a motion, or demanding “Point of Order” to interrupt a long-winded tangent. This time-tested system may seem antiquated, but it enables meetings to be conducted predictably, fairly, and with consensus-based outcomes.

New village manager's roots and commitment run deep

To the residents and neighbors of Stockbridge,

It is an incredible privilege to introduce myself as your new Village Manager. While the official title is new, this community has long been my home. I have lived in the Stockbridge area for over 50 years, and my family’s roots here run deep. Many of you may remember my mother, Betty Turner, who served our community as a dedicated local librarian for decades.

I grew up on our local roads, graduated as a Stockbridge Panther in 1989, and met Kim, my wife of 29 years, while she was attending Michigan State University. Together, we raised our two sons, Conrad and Zane, here in Stockbridge. After graduating from Stockbridge High School in 2016 and 2018, both of our boys studied at Jackson College.

Scars of sober support—The other side of the story

October is a month that brings its own kind of clarity. It asks us to look at addiction not just through the lens of the person fighting it, but through the eyes of the ones who stand beside that fight. With Substance Abuse Awareness Month and World Mental Health Day falling on Oct. 10, we’re reminded that addiction and mental health are inseparable conversations. When one fractures, the other strains—for both the addict and the supporter.

Last year, Faces of Addiction presented an update on Richard’s journey, which began in 2018, “Through the Eyes of the Incarcerated“ (Aug. 2018). His struggle, his effort, his early steps toward sobriety were later chronicled in “Nine different, but powerful, words pierced through silent veins of addiction” (Dec. 2025). What I didn’t explore then was my own place in that story.

The Stockbridge Library is excited to announce a new holiday project: A Halloween costume exchange! From Oct. 1 through Halloween, the library is asking members of the community to consider donating any costumes your children have outgrown. Bring these costumes to the CADL Stockbridge branch and either donate them or exchange them for a costume someone else has donated.

The Halloween costume exchange is entirely free to everyone, and the project’s success depends on people who are willing to participate! (We are also accepting new costumes if some people are willing to donate them.)

We only ask that the costumes be complete, clean, and in good condition. Please do not bring any home or yard decorations.

Drop off donated costumes in the large plastic bins inside the door of the Stockbridge Library. The bins will be at the library beginning on Oct. 1 and will be available all month long.
