🎤 HEARING PATIENTS ISN’T ENOUGH. LISTEN. THEN TAKE ACTION! 💯

Yesterday, our Founder & CEO, Oya Gilbert, joined fellow advocates Gabriel Nathan, Daniel Gereg, and Megan Starshak at Johnson & Johnson’s North America Forum and HealtheVoices Expo in Titusville, NJ.

Moderated by J&J’s Isha Williams, the conversation delivered one powerful message:

🗣️ Patient voices deserve more than a platform.

💡 Lived experiences should influence decisions.

✊🏾 Real partnerships must lead to real ACTION!

Oya also had the opportunity to connect with Kevin J. Hamill, Company Group Chairman, North America at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine.

At Health, Hope & Hip-Hop Foundation, we’re committed to making sure patient voices don’t just start conversations. They help create CHANGE!

Much love to our fellow panelists, Isha, and the J&J and HealtheVoices teams for bringing patient voices into these important conversations! 🙌🏾

LISTEN. UNDERSTAND. ACT.

DON’T JUST INVITE US. BUILD WITH US. 🎤

That’s the energy we brought to Pfizer!

Our founder Oya Gilbert and fellow myeloma patient advocate Thomas Goode joined Jeff Legos and the Pfizer Oncology team for Health, Hope & Hip-Hop: A Fireside Session at Pfizer’s Collegeville, PA location.

And the conversation didn’t stop there.

Pfizer colleagues joined from across the U.S. and around the world, with teams at participating sites rocking Health, Hope & Hip-Hop Foundation T-shirts! 🙌🏾

But the real impact was in the conversation.

Jeff spoke about bringing together communities across geographic and cultural boundaries.

Thomas shared why he found his voice as a patient advocate after experiencing how difficult it can be for patients to talk openly about cancer.

And Oya reminded everyone why we use hip-hop to advance health literacy:

TRUST.

🎤 Culture creates connection.
🗣️ Patient voices create understanding.
🔬 Science creates possibilities.
🤝 Trust brings us together.

“Don’t just invite us, come and build with us. ’Cause the cure moves faster at the speed of trust.”

A special shoutout to Pfizer’s Advocacy Team, Jeff Legos and the entire Pfizer Oncology team for creating space for authentic patient voices.

This is what happens when science meets culture and patients help shape the conversation.

🎥 Watch the recap!

HEALTH. HOPE. HIP-HOP.

HIP-HOP. HEALTH. PURPOSE. SUMMER MADNESS 16. 🎤🔥

What a weekend.

On September 26, the energy started building with the face-offs. Then on September 27, some of battle rap’s best stepped on the Summer Madness 16 stage—and the Health, Hope & Hip-Hop Foundation was proud to be a sponsor of it all.

For us, this partnership with URL made perfect sense.

Our mission has always been about meeting people where they are and using the power of hip-hop culture to make conversations about health, wellness and advocacy relevant to our communities. And there aren’t many spaces more authentically hip-hop than battle rap—MCs standing face-to-face, going bar for bar, with the culture watching.

For me personally, it was full circle. Hip-hop saved my life growing up. Then, after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2017, I turned that pain into purpose.

Now, through Health, Hope & Hip-Hop, we want to use the culture that gave so much to us to help save lives.

We want our people enjoying the battles, living their lives and celebrating the culture—but we also want them prioritizing their health, knowing their bodies, getting checked, asking questions and advocating for themselves.

Much love to SMACK/URLTV.TV, Troy Smack Mitchell, |Ic and E Beasley for welcoming us and recognizing that health belongs in the culture, too.

Summer Madness 16 was bigger than battles for us. It was another opportunity to put health where the culture is. 💯

A special thank you to Nicole Yvonne Duncan- Smith for bringing us together ❤️

With support from Johnson & Johnson.

🎙️ NEW EPISODE JUST DROPPED!

Everybody loves when the beat drops. 🎶

But imagine living your life waiting for a beat you hope NEVER comes.

On the newest Hip Hope Hooray! Men Talkin’ Health, I sit down with Gulf War veteran and patient advocate Eric Blackburn to talk about life with smoldering multiple myeloma.

The uncertainty.
The mental weight.
The waiting.

But here’s the BAR:

🔥 Waiting does not mean standing still.

Eric turned his wait into purpose—from advocating for veterans and patients to cycling through Iceland in support of myeloma research.

And he leaves us with a question all of us can sit with:

What are you going to do with the time you’ve been given?

🎤 STOP #2: ATLANTA — MIC CHECK!

Philly kicked it off. Now Mic Check Myeloma: We Care for the Culture Tour is headed SOUTH. 🔥

On Saturday, September 19, we’re bringing myeloma awareness, real conversations, lived experience, expert knowledge and hip-hop culture together at Terminus 330 in Atlanta.

And ATL, look at this lineup. 👀

🎙️ Francesca Amiker — Emmy Award-winning storyteller, Atlanta native and V-103 personality — will moderate the conversation.

🩺 Dr. Joseph Mikhael — one of the nation’s leading myeloma experts — is bringing the knowledge.

💪🏾 Nicole Duncan-Smith and Oya Gilbert are bringing the patient and advocacy perspective.

❤️ Bridgette Tarplin-McKenzie is bringing the voice of a care partner who has walked alongside her mother through a 20+ year myeloma journey.

🙌🏾 April Byrd is bringing her story of survivorship, purpose and what it means to live beyond a blood cancer diagnosis.

🎧 And this is Atlanta, so you already know the culture has to be represented. DJ Jelly will be on the turntables bringing that ATL energy.

This isn’t a lecture.
This isn’t your typical health event.

This is health information delivered differently. In community. Through culture.

Today, Health, Hope and Hip Hop Foundation proudly celebrates Positive K for turning his personal experience as a caregiver into purpose.

By joining the Alzheimer’s Association as an advocate, Positive K is using his voice to raise awareness, uplift caregivers and remind families affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia that they are not alone.

We also salute Q-Tip, Rapsody and Speech of Arrested Development for using their voices and artistry to bring visibility to the ways dementia affects families and Black communities.

We honor every artist who shares their truth. We embrace every family navigating an uncertain journey. Most of all, we pour love into the caregivers who keep showing up with patience, strength and compassion—even when no one sees the weight they carry.

Your work matters. Your stories matter. Your health matters, too.

Now it’s our turn to use our voices. Learn the signs. Start the conversations in our families and communities. Support caregivers. And advocate for greater awareness, resources and access to care for every family impacted by Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Learn more and find resources at:

Awareness is where it starts. Advocacy is how we move it forward.

More than music. This is personal. This is purpose.
