GSU Aging Well for Everyone Neuropsychology Lab

BACKGROUND
Georgia State University (GSU) is part of a multi-site, NIA-funded study of centenarians and their offspring.
Centenarians (people age 100 and older) are rare individuals and there is very good scientific evidence that they and their family members can help us understand how some people are able to live such long lives, often avoiding or at least markedly delaying aging-related diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
We are asking for your help recruiting people age 100 and older who may be eligible for our study. We are also recruiting centenarians’ siblings and children.
They can live anywhere in the lower 48 states or Canada. They will not need to travel for the study.
Given Black people have a greater chance than White people of living to 100 years old after the age of 85 and represent 12% of the US but only 5% of research volunteers, we would especially appreciate your help recruiting Black participants.
WHAT THE STUDY ENTAILS FOR PARTICIPANTS
Participants fill out questionnaires about their health and habits, family tree, and background.
We administer cognitive and physical function assessments by phone or video call.
We travel to the participants’ home to obtain a blood sample.
An optional f***l sample is self-collected through a hygienic and easy to use stool collection kit sent to participants in the mail.
Whenever possible, we also ask for the assistance of a family member or caregiver.
Apart from the blood draw, we collect all the study information by mail, phone, or video call.

Job Details
The Department of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for a tenure track position as Assistant Professor of Sociology (9 month term of appointment) who specializes in qualitative methods, with an open substantive specialty to begin fall 2027. We seek to hire a scholar who can contribute to training undergraduate and graduate students in qualitative research. Duties include departmental and institutional service, active research, and the development and delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses.
Requirements for this position include 1) a Ph.D. in Sociology or related field; 2) a strong research agenda that includes the use of qualitative research methods; 3) a commitment to teaching in a dynamic, access-oriented, urban research university, 4) evidence of teaching experience or preparation for college teaching; and 5) potential to secure external funding.
The Department of Sociology offers the B.A. and M.A. in Sociology and our faculty participate in multiple interdisciplinary programs including Data Science, Organizational Science, and Public Policy doctoral programs. The core strengths in the Department are sociology of work and organizations, health, public policy, stratification, education, and social psychology.
