Time spent in a classroom shouldn’t be our strongest evidence that a student is ready to move forward.

Mastery should matter.

IF nearly 4 in 10 eighth graders aren’t demonstrating even basic math skills… THEN why are we still moving students forward based primarily on age and time?

Competency-based education shifts the question from “Did the student complete the year?” to “What have they mastered, and what support do they need next?”

DOTT Academy welcomed our students’ grandparents and special loved ones for a special breakfast celebrating their love, wisdom, and encouragement. It was a sweet opportunity to spend time together and recognize the special place they hold in our students’ lives.

Mastery shows up when students can take what they’ve learned, make connections, and apply it when the problem looks completely different.

That’s when learning becomes something they can truly use.

DOTT Academy had a booth at Sabor y Éxito in Greenacres this past weekend! This family friendly Hispanic Heritage Month celebration highlighted Hispanic culture, local culinary traditions, and small businesses through food, music, art, and community activities.

Spooky season has entered D.E.A.R. Time! 🎃📚

During Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Time, Dr.B read “Room on the Broom,” then rolled the question die 🎲 to put students’ comprehension skills to work.

They reflected on the story, compared themselves to the characters, and discussed their answers with one another.

Because reading is not just about finishing the story. It’s about thinking, connecting, and communicating. 💭✨

Putting Geography Together, One Piece at a Time!

Our students practiced identifying the United States and the seven continents through hands-on puzzle activities. As they worked, they strengthened their geographic vocabulary, location awareness, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently and with others.

At DOTT Academy, competency-based learning includes giving students meaningful opportunities to practice foundational skills at their level before moving on to more complex learning.

Learning came to life on our latest field trip! 🦋🌿

Our students learned about the butterfly life cycle and transformation, interacted with colorful parrots and gently touched butterflies as they explored their surroundings.

Butterfly World is the world’s largest butterfly facility, featuring more than 20,000 live butterflies, lush botanical gardens, and interactive aviaries.

At DOTT Academy, every experience is an opportunity to explore, connect, and thrive. ✨

IF students only learn for the test, THEN what happens after the test is over?

Memorizing information long enough to pass an assessment isn’t the same as learning.

Real learning sticks. It’s when students can explain it, apply it, connect it, and use what they know in a new situation.

The question shouldn’t just be, “Did they pass?”

It should be, “Do they understand?”

Because meaningful learning lasts long after the test is gone.

In our Foundations POD, play is purposeful! 🧩✨

Students are given a shared goal and clear success criteria, then encouraged to plan, create, and problem-solve together. Through intentional play, they strengthen collaboration, communication, creativity, decision-making, leadership, and flexibility, all while learning how to listen to others, share ideas, and work through challenges as a team.

At DOTT Academy, play isn’t a break from learning, it’s an essential part of how our youngest learners grow beyond limits! 💛
