Join us Thursday Evening in Mineola

Please join us on Thursday, July 17, from 5:30 to 7pm at the Nassau County Legislature (corner of Franklin Ave & Old Country Rd). We will gather at the statue of Theodore Roosevelt. (Sign up)

The League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset and the Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock invite you to attend to honor the legacy of John Lewis, who urged us all to “help redeem the soul of America.”

We will rally together to make our voices heard — and visible — by taking peaceful, non-violent, nonpartisan action to challenge injustice, protest our current constitutional crisis, and create meaningful change.

We ask those who join us to:

Not to attach metal or wooden sticks to any posters/signs you bring,
Ensure we don't impede non-rally-going foot traffic,
Follow instructions of organizers during the event,
Focus the messaging/graphics of posters/signs on issues (human rights, civil rights, good public policy, constitutional issues).

The League's Rise and Unite 8.5 Campaign seeks to contribute to rallying 3.5% of the US public (8.5 million people) visibly protesting as a mechanism to achieve significant change. Learn more by reading here or listening to audio. Power lies in the people — but only if "we the people" demonstrate our power audibly and visibly.

We look forward to having you join us, and please consider bringing family, friends, and neighbors. We are seeking to mobilize 8.5 million people across the country. You can sign up here by clicking on Mineola on the map. https://goodtroubleliveson.org/

12/21/2024

President Biden campaigned on a promise to close the gender equality gap by publishing our fully ratified 28th Amendment, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), and now he is running out of time. There are only 30 days left for this administration to publish the ERA.

RATIFIED FILM SCREENING & PANEL
This Monday, you are invited to join LWV for a national screening of the film RATIFIED. The film covers the impassioned century-long fight to enshrine gender equality in the US Constitution and where we are today. This event is hosted by our “Biden Publish the ERA” alliance partner, VoteEquality.

After the screening has us fired up, VoteEquality will host a panel of advocates, including LWV's president Dianna Wynn and leaders of the three final ratifying state campaigns, to help us all find ways NOW to build pressure on President Biden to ensure publication of the ERA before he leaves office.

WHAT: RATIFIED film screening and panel

WHEN: Monday, Dec. 23 | 6:15pm ET

WHERE: Virtual, from the comfort of your own home!

Tickets to this virtual event are $5 and require a free Kinema account to view. Find details, purchase tickets, and watch a trailer of the film at the link below.

RATIFIED FILM SCREENING & PANEL

The Senate, House of Representatives, and legal and advocacy community have all called on President Biden to publish the ERA, and now we must come together and get so loud we can’t be ignored. Join us for this historic moment. Let's get it done.

In the United States, women are still not guaranteed equal rights. We have seen the devastating consequences of this reality. Yet, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which will update the US Constitution to protect the equality of rights under the law regardless of s*x, can be added to the Constitution with one action. With just months left in office, we are urging President Biden to act to ensure that the ERA is published.

The ERA will protect against the rollback of rights, provide a vital tool for the judicial branch to decide s*x discrimination cases, and pave the way for further legislative progress toward s*x and gender equality.

The 2024 election results were not friendly to women’s equality, and our future status in the country is at stake. It’s imperative that President Biden take urgent action to ensure the process of publishing the Amendment is completed since it has been fully ratified since 2020.

Please click the link below to SIGN THE PETITION. Forward this link to your friends and family to urge President Biden to instruct the US Archivist to certify and publish the ERA in the Constitution! Equality cannot wait.

With just months left in office, we are urging President Biden to act to ensure that the ERA is published.

Dear League Members and Supporters,

Thank you for your tireless work this election season. You registered thousands of voters, served as poll workers and as members of our rapid response team, participated in get out the vote efforts, organized nonpartisan candidate forums, and ran Vote411.org—all critical contributions to our democracy. Thanks to your efforts, we saw greater voter engagement, a strong early voter turnout, and a continued focus on making our elections fair, transparent, and inclusive. Across the country, the League reached 30 million voters this election season and 9.19 million voters used Vote411.org as a resource. We also were a part of the successful campaign to pass Prop 1, the most expansive state level equal rights amendment nationwide.

As we celebrate a successful election, we cannot ignore the challenges ahead. We know that you may have mixed emotions and, perhaps, feel uncertain about the future. We acknowledge that the rhetoric and proposed policies of our future elected officials do not always align with the mission and values of our organization. New York, like the rest of the nation, is navigating uncertain times. We’ve seen recent attacks on voting rights, efforts to roll back campaign finance reforms, and a troubling lack of progress on crucial pro-democracy legislation. At the same time, there are growing threats to civil rights, social justice, and environmental protections across our nation.

In the days ahead, we must stand by our immigrant, refugee, and LGBTQ+ friends who were targeted by hateful rhetoric and fear that rhetoric will turn into reality. While the League is strictly non-partisan, we are still fiercely political, and we will hold our government accountable while defending the rights of all New Yorkers.

We will continue to fight for climate justice, reproductive rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, economic equity, justice system reform, public education, and transparency. We cannot forget the vital importance of protecting and strengthening our democracy. Our state must lead the way in defending democracy, safeguarding rights, and fighting for the future we want. It’s important that we remember that we are a part of something bigger.

Together, we will continue to be a powerful force for change in New York State.

Thank you once again for all you do, and for being a vital part of the League of Women Voters community. We are proud to stand with you.

Onward,

Erica Smitka
