Our Story
The Julia Rusinek Memorial Fund was formed to celebrate the life of Julia Rusinek and to honor the ideals for which she lived. The Fund was established so that Julia's commitment to children could live on through direct interactions with children and financial support of educational activities and enrichment programs. We are a not-for-profit, tax-exempt 501c3 organization with virtually no operating expenses. Since the Fund's inception, we had worked closely with a number of day care centers and after school programs for disadvantaged children. Our main benefactor is LEAP (Leadership, Education, Athletics in Partnership), an organization providing year-round academic and social enrichment programs for children and youth from high poverty neighborhoods in New Haven, CT. As of 2013, our contributions to LEAP total $149,600. In the past we also helped the Literacy Center at Boys and Girls Harbor, Harriet Tubman Day Care, a center, located in a shelter for homeless families (closed in 2007); Harbor Oasis Day Care, a center located in a low-income housing project in East Harlem; Hour Children, an organization based in Long Island City serving children of incarcerated mothers; English Language Learners classes at Flushing High School, in Flushing, NY; PS 3 in Bronx NY. Our mission is to help children to develop a love of books, nature, and the performing arts. With this goal in mind, we have conducted weekly book readings followed by discussions; we have created and replenished libraries with the latest and the best in children's literature; we have given the children books as Christmas presents; we have enrolled them for programs at the New York Botanical Gardens, organized and sponsored trips to children’s concerts at Carnegie Hall. Thanks to our grant new immigrant students at Flushing High School were able to participate in a project where a teaching artist from the Lincoln Center Theater, in collaboration with English language teachers at the School, was applying theater techniques to enhance English language acquisition and speaking skills. We provided grammar and spelling workbooks for third grade students in PS 3 in the Bronx. Julia's Run for Children is our annual fundraiser. The event commemorates Julia and to celebrates her love of running. Julia's Run is held each spring at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
