What does a day at Walking With Swager look like?

Well, no two days are exactly the same but there are similarities.

Take Wednesday for example. The day started with meetings at 8:30 and 10:30. The meetings were followed by teaching a class about what to watch out for following a disaster at Fifty Forward in Donelson. A meeting at 2:30 then collecting tools for a church group that had a serve day scheduled at 6:00 clearing some debris at one of the Goodlettsville parks. That was followed by a Disaster Response presentation at Faith Presbyterian Church at 6:30. Once that was complete, we collected the tools the church group used for their serve day around 8:15.

It was a good day. I was struck by how much of a normal day it was. It felt like a normal flow for the first time since we moved from our offices inside Rivergate Mall and our Winter Storm Fern response.

Yesterday, Walking With Swager restocked 4 of the blessing boxes we maintain around the community. It’s another thing we do in blue sky moments.

Your support makes it possible for us to acquire food items to stock the boxes. Sometimes we purchase food items outright. In this case, we used some leftover pantry boxes from another partner agency we serve with.

When there is not an active disaster response happening, we call that “blue skies.” As an organization, blue skies is a time of preparation for the next disaster, but it is also a time where we meet local needs. One way is through partnership with other organizations and groups serving the community through service projects.

One of our favorite activities in blue skies is resourcing organizations to help them fulfill their mission. This week, we had the privilege to provide some hygiene and clothing items for an organization that serves at Bonnaroo Music Festival each year. They provide hygiene items, basic clothing, and other items that individuals may need while attending the festival events for free.
