o workforce development. And we make sure that local, state and national legislators know how Gladewater companies feel about important issues affecting local business. During the year 1931 the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce was formed with R.M. Wood as the first President. On April 23,1946 the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce became incorporated with twenty-one directors to serve the needs of the membership. Today the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce has, over 200 members served by a dedicated Board of Directors and a full time staff. For over six decades, business and professional people have joined together in the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce to shape the future of Gladewater and the surrounding area. The Gladewater Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary partnership of business and professional people working together to build a healthy economy and to improve the quality of life in your community. As your chamber works to accomplish these goals, it has many hats: economic developer and planner; tourist information center; business spokesperson; economic counselor and teacher; government relations specialist; human resources advisor; and public relations practitioner. Simply stated, your chamber is business and professional people working together to make your community a better place for everyone to live and work. The Gladewater Chamber is run by its members. They elect a Board of Directors that determines policies and sets goals. A president presides over all Board meetings. Your chamber's day-to-day operations are handled by a professional manager. This person is a paid employee. Some small communities have managers who are either volunteers or part-time employees. Members often become involved in chamber activities by working on committees. These committees range from economic development, education and human resources to conventions, tourism, public affairs and government relations. The Gladewater Chamber of Commerce is investing in Gladewater business every day. Isn't it time you invested in the Chamber?

Happy Flag Day to America!

On this day in 1777, Congress adopted a resolution establishing an official flag of the United States: “Resolved, that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Interestingly, Congress did not require that the stars be displayed on the flag in any particular pattern, so that the arrangement of the stars on the flag was left to the flag makers’ discretion. An early and popular version of the flag arranged the stars in a circle, to represent the equality of the states. Not until 1912, pursuant to an Executive Order of President Taft, was an official arrangement of the stars designated.

In 1794 two stripes and two stars were added to the flag, in recognition of the newly added states of Vermont and Kentucky. In 1818 Congress enacted a law requiring that the number of stars on the flag equal the number of states but returning the number of stripes to thirteen.

President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916, recognizing June 14 as “Flag Day,” as did President Calvin Coolidge in 1927. Not until 1949, however, did Congress pass a law officially establishing Flag Day as a national observance.

So, Happy Birthday to the Stars and Stripes and Happy Flag Day!
