Gladewater 150 celebrates the Gladewater, Texas Sesquicentennial!

This year has been a wonderful celebration of Gladewater’s rich history. Each month an event was sponsored to highlight a different characteristic that makes our hometown unique. Many volunteers donated their time and energy to make sure all events were successful. Thanks to everyone who participated in these events!!

The 150th Celebration will come to a close at midnight. However, the SPIRIT and HOSPITALITY of our citizens will continue as we move forward into Gladewater’s future!

Celebrating the close of Gladewater, Texas’s sesquicentennial! Let's journey to The Brookings Res-Mor Motel on Upshur Avenue, notably where ELVIS PRESLEY, Scotty Moore & Bill Black stayed during Elvis's performances in and around Gladewater.

Even a year before the success of "Heartbreak Hotel," Elvis had a packed schedule in 1954 and especially in 1955. Check out the receipt for his stay at the Res-Mor motel on Sept 22, 1955. Elvis performed at the Louisiana Hayride on September 24th and returned to East Texas on September 26th for a show at the Trinity High School Auditorium in Gilmer, Texas.

As we end the year celebrating the Gladewater, Texas sesquicentennial, let’s take a trip downtown to the corner of Main Street and Pacific Avenue!

Originally a Texaco Station in the 1930’s, the property was a working service station for more than several decades before housing a few different ventures over the next several years.

We hope everyone had a great, joyful Christmas! Last year at this time we were just five days away from the celebration of the year; The beginning of the Gladewater, Texas sesquicentennial! Let’s reflect on Gladewater 150 and revisit last January's enchanting "A Night at the Museum" as we celebrated the sesquicentennial with a kick-off, cake, and unforgettable moments.

Journey back to 1949 and Broadway Elementary School in Gladewater, Texas, as we conclude Gladewater's sesquicentennial!

During the school's 75th celebration in 2019, students buried a time capsule on the premises. Former principal Darren Richardson shared a nostalgic moment, saying, "There's even an old paddle from my teaching days in Tyler that I used right here in Gladewater. I hope, in 25 years at age 67, I'll return and say, 'I remember putting that time capsule right there!'"
