The mission of the National Service Committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the U.S., now known as Pentecost Today USA, is to BRING baptism in the Holy Spirit to the whole Church, BUILD unity in the Body of Christ, and to SERVE the poor. The Catholic Charismatic Renewal as it exists today is the outgrowth from a retreat held in February 1967 of several faculty members and students from Du

quesne University. Many of the students - though not all - experienced a movement of God’s Spirit called being “baptized in the Holy Spirit.” The professors had previously been “baptized in the Spirit” a week or two before. God’s action was also prepared for in a very human way by the students’ prayerful preparation in reading the Acts of the Apostles and a book entitled The Cross and the Switchblade.What happened quickly spread to graduate students and professors at the University of Notre Dame and others serving in campus ministry in Lansing, Michigan. It continued to spread so that, as of this date, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal exists in over 238 countries in the world, having touched over 100 million Catholics in its over 50-year existence.

Pope Leo XIV gave his historic first address to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal on Saturday, May 30, 2026, saying:

“For his part, Benedict XVI referred to the specific contribution you make to the Church. He said: “One of the positive elements and aspects of the Community of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is precisely their emphasis on the charisms or gifts of the Holy Spirit and their merit lies in having recalled their topicality in the Church” (Address to the 13th International Conference of the Catholic Fraternity of Charismatic Covenant Communities and Fellowship, 31 October 2008).

Like Cardinal Suenens in the early days of the movement, Pope Francis frequently spoke of you as a “flood of grace,” which is “for the whole Church, not just for some” (Prayer Vigil on the Occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, 3 June 2017). In summary, he outlined your path as “evangelization, spiritual ecumenism, caring for the poor and needy, and welcoming the marginalized,” and added, “all of it is based on worship! The foundation of the renewal is worshiping God!” (Address at the 37th National Convocation of the Renewal in the Holy Spirit, 1 June 2014).

I, too, wish to foster the relationship of mutual respect, closeness and support between the See of Peter and the great family of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.”

During the papal audience on May 30, 2026, our team delivered over 350 letters to Pope Leo XIV from those praying the Holy Spirit 2033 Novena, Confirmation candidates, and Renewal and Church leaders - asking him to consecrate the 21st Century to the Holy Spirit.

Inspired by Saint Elena Guerra’s letter written to Pope Leo XIII on October 15, 1900, we invited all praying the Holy Spirit 2033 Novena to write letters to Pope Leo XIV, bishops, and pastors - asking them to pray and share the Holy Spirit 2033 Novena.

May the Holy Spirit powerfully inspire the prayer and action of the novena to ignite a new and ongoing Pentecost, especially as we prepare for the 2000-year anniversary of the birth of the Church at Pentecost in 2033!
