The mission of the National Service Committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the U.S., now known as Pentecost Today USA, is to BRING baptism in the Holy Spirit to the whole Church, BUILD unity in the Body of Christ, and to SERVE the poor. The Catholic Charismatic Renewal as it exists today is the outgrowth from a retreat held in February 1967 of several faculty members and students from Duquesne University. Many of the students - though not all - experienced a movement of God’s Spirit called being “baptized in the Holy Spirit.” The professors had previously been “baptized in the Spirit” a week or two before. God’s action was also prepared for in a very human way by the students’ prayerful preparation in reading the Acts of the Apostles and a book entitled The Cross and the Switchblade.What happened quickly spread to graduate students and professors at the University of Notre Dame and others serving in campus ministry in Lansing, Michigan. It continued to spread so that, as of this date, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal exists in over 238 countries in the world, having touched over 100 million Catholics in its over 50-year existence.

What is the relationship between the Renewal and the Sacramental economy of the Ecclesia?

"In sacramental terms, the charismatic renewal is based on a renewal of that which makes one belong to the Church, that is, a renewal of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist). The Spirit given in initiation is more fully appropriated at the personal and social level so that there is a continual metanoia throughout the life of the Christian." - Malines 1

Join us in honoring the life and witness of Virginia King.

May 1, 1952 – October 13, 2026.
.. the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” -Romans 5:5

When Virginia King encountered the Holy Spirit in 1976, she said it was like receiving “a life-changing heart transplant,” transforming her relationship with God and her relationship with those around her. She has said “there was a realization that God loved and cared for us personally, and that my response to that was to be grateful and to respond to his grace.”

Her response was to offer her gifts to so that more would know this grace.

She served on the National Service Committee from 2001 through 2007, and served as the Executive Director of Western Washington Catholic Charismatic Renewal for 30 years. She also provided support for various international intercession projects.

As a member of the editorial board of the Pentecost Today Magazine in 2005, she placed both her pen and her voice at the service of God throughout her tenure with us, for which we are deeply grateful.

Virginia was a faithful woman whose life was saturated in the Word of God, and we give thanks for her as we lift her up in prayer to the Father of Mercies for a joyous entry into her eternal home.

Her funeral service will be held today, at 11am at St. Pius X Church in Mountlake Terrace, WA.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her.

"At the Duquesne Weekend a statue of Our Lady was held up and we were told that Mary was our model in surrender to the Holy Spirit. It was fitting that she should be explicitly acknowledged in 1967 when this new Pentecost began among Catholics. Mary was in the Cenacle that first Pentecost, interceding and yielding to her Spouse, the Holy Spirit. Saturday, just hours after I was baptized in the Spirit, I opened the Scripture at random. My eyes fell on Mary’s Magnificat: 'My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.' Over these 50 years she has been a living Mother, guiding my life in the Spirit. To whatever measure I have been faithful to the grace of baptism in the Spirit, I owe it all to her motherly love. Invite her into your Upper Room this year!

Last Monday, at the CHARIS Americas Intercontinental Conference in Peru, Sister Nancy Kellar, S.C., was honored for more than 50 years of service and leadership in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

Sister Nancy was among the first to meet Cardinal Suenens, who visited the United States from the Vatican during the early days of the Renewal. She was also a member of one of the Renewal’s first Houses of Prayer, founded by Fr. Jim Ferry.

She has served as a member of the National Service Committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the U.S., director of the ICCRS office in Rome, and has traveled the world to speak and teach in 65 nations.

Today, Sister Nancy serves as a pastoral consultant to the National Service Committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the U.S.

How do we understand the relationship between an individual relationship with God and the ecclesial community?

Both dimensions aid each other. "Private and individual should not be placed in opposition to social as though the Gospel is without its individual and inward meaning. Saint Elena Guerra sent a series of letters to Pope Leo XIII at the beginning of the 20th century asking for a return to the Spirit as the source of both prayer and unity among Christians.

The 20th century saw an outpouring of the Spirit. In 1901, what is now known as the Pentecostal Movement was born among students praying for an experience of Pentecost in Topeka, Kansas and spread throughout the world within 10 years and has reached an estimated 600 million people worldwide.

Saint Elena Guerra was canonized on
October 20, 2024. She was recognized as an “Apostle of the Holy Spirit.

After my experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit 32 years ago, one thing was very clear: 'I am loved by God.' This experience was so overwhelming that it would often lead me to tears. The fact that I was forgiven, my toxic shame taken away, my guilt removed, and a new sense of identity given to me as a child of God, cannot be over-emphasized. I just could not stop thinking about God! Anytime I raised my 'heart and mind' to God I was in prayer. I have grown to understand that the goal of prayer is to become one with God—'union with God.' I am not just called to 'say' prayers but 'become' prayer. Prayer has to infuse all activities of my life."

"Why is it important that our personal relationship with God, deepened through the Renewal, is not individualistic?
"In so far as this experience of God is social in character (1 Cor. 14:24), it reflects the ecclesial nature of the charisms. Charisms have to do with the inner structures of the Church's life and with her ministry as well as with personal experience. The renewal has come to recognize a false individualism which interprets the New Testament witness in terms of private faith, a private experience of God, and a narrow focusing on private interiority and inwardness."(Malines 1)
