AMOS is a Christian healthcare organization dedicated to bringing health and hope to underserved communities in rural Nicaragua. http://www.amoshealth.org

AMOS Health and Hope is a non-profit faith based organization dedicated to improving the health of poor and marginalized rural populations. We use the strategy of community based primary health care to increase health care coverage in areas with limited services. We train lay health workers in rural communities to manage and run their own community clinic, prevent and treat the most common illnesses, and work in community development to address the root causes of poor health such as access to safe water and sanitation. We currently serve a population of over 28,000 people in 25 communities in four departments in Nicaragua – Boaco, Chinandega, Matagalpa, the RACCS, and Managua. We have an incredible staff of medical and public health professionals that accompany, supervise and monitor the health work being done in rural communities. We are committed to implementing interventions that are evidence-based, compassionate and empowering for communities.

What a September it was! 💛

We started the month with our Wellness Club, where members came together to share, learn and take care of their health side by side. Their wisdom and joy fill every gathering.

We were so happy to welcome our friends from All Saints & St. Lucy’s, who joined us for activities in Chinandega and Nejapa. Thank you for walking alongside our team and the families we serve. Your visit meant so much!

In Chinandega, we also met with community heath volunteers and midwives, the people who keep health care close to home in their villages. Every conversation with them reminds us that the strongest health systems start in the community.

And to close the month, our staff spent a day at Hacienda Los Alpes for team building, because caring for each other is part of how we care for others.

Strawberry or mint? In Nejapa, strawberry won by a landslide. A few days ago we applied fluoride to the children there, with our dentist, Dr Allison, already in her Christmas pajamas, and a balloon glove that made the whole thing a lot easier. 🙏

All Saints Church and St. Lucy’s Church, you gave your hands to a health post in Chinandega, and you keep walking alongside the brigadistas of Villanueva (the community health volunteers) long after the trip ends.
And thank you for sharing your love with the pregnant mothers and children who come to the Samaritan Clinic in Nejapa. They feel it.

This is our photo roundup for August. It was a full month.

In El Ayote, we celebrated the installation of a solar power system, steadier electricity for the health center, and vaccines that stay cold, safe, and ready for whoever needs them.

We also held an early childhood stimulation workshop, where mothers and fathers got to remember what it feels like to be a child again. That’s how you learn to help one.

At AMOS, our staff kept training on water filters, so we can equip more health volunteers and keep bringing safe drinking water to rural communities across Nicaragua.

And of course, the Wellness Club (patients with chronic illnesses club), where women got to work, for their health, and for an old age with dignity.

A share doesn’t buy medicine. It doesn’t walk four hours into the mountains. It doesn’t sit up with a mother at 2 a.m.

But it’s how somebody found out we do.

Everything in this video already happened. The toothbrushes. The meal after the hike. The boxes coming off the truck. The heartbeat.

None of it started with a donation. It started with someone deciding this was worth ten seconds of their attention, and passing it on.

Arlen leads her household, raises two young kids, and for eight years has served as a brigadista in a rural community near Waslala, often the first person her neighbors turn to for care.
That same desire to serve is now taking her further: with an AMOS Seeds of Hope scholarship, she’s on her way to becoming a nurse.
