“What does it mean to create a “”safe space”” for a child who has experienced trauma? 🏡

When a child enters the foster care system, their entire world is turned upside down. They are entering an unfamiliar home, sleeping in a strange bed, and interacting with adults they don’t know. In these early moments, the physical environment matters just as much as emotional support. Creating a therapeutic, welcoming environment isn’t about having a mansion or a perfectly decorated room—it is about predictability, warmth, and respect.

At Jonathan’s Place, we teach our foster families how to prepare their homes to soothe a child’s nervous system. Simple things like having a nightlight ready, keeping a basket of snacks accessible so they know they won’t go hungry, or letting them choose their own bedding can make an institutional transition feel profoundly personal. When a home feels predictable, a child can finally stop operating in survival mode and begin the journey toward healing.

A pizza-making class may seem simple.

But for the children at Jonathan’s Place, moments like these are about so much more than pizza.

Recently, Chef Mark McDaniel spent time with our youth leading a Create-Your-Own Pizza experience while sharing pieces of his own personal journey. Through conversation, encouragement, and connection, our children had the opportunity to hear from someone who has overcome challenges, pursued his dreams, and built a successful career.

Experiences like these matter.

They help our children see new possibilities for their own futures. They remind them that their current circumstances do not determine where their story ends. They create moments of hope, confidence, and connection that can leave a lasting impact long after the pizza is gone.

At Jonathan’s Place, we believe every child deserves opportunities to learn, grow, dream, and be surrounded by adults who believe in them.
