Please join Bessie Morris Foundation in celebrating Day which honors Indigenous American peoples (Native Americans) and commemorates their histories and cultures. It is celebrated on the 2nd Monday in October - this year, October 12th.

Native American Day is now a state paid holiday in California, celebrated annually on the fourth Friday of September to honor the culture, history, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

History
• Origins: Governor Culbert Olson first proclaimed an "Indian Day" in 1939, which later evolved into California Native American Day in 1968 through a resolution signed by Governor Ronald Reagan.
• Official Recognition: It was designated as a legal state holiday in 1998.
• State Apology & Legislation: The state has used the occasion to formalize official apologies for historic harms against California Native Americans and advance tribal co-stewardship and cultural preservation.
