Translators without Borders Translators without Borders (TWB) is a U.S. TWB is part of CLEAR Global. And our impact keeps growing. How can you help?

nonprofit organization that aims to close the language gaps that hinder critical humanitarian and international development efforts worldwide. Translators without Borders (TWB) is a global community of over 100,000 language volunteers helping people get vital information and be heard, whatever language they speak. Since our founding in 2011, the TWB Community has contributed over 90 million words in 3,077 unique language combinations for over 200 partner organizations. Today, TWB is at the core of CLEAR Global, a US-based nonprofit organization that provides language support and technology solutions to partner nonprofits. 🛟 13th October is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Disseminating information is important before disasters strike. However, if information is only available in limited languages, people will be left behind.

Local governments and organizations need to build language inclusion into disaster preparedness initiatives so that everyone can be protected against disasters.

September 30th is International Translation Day.

This year, we’re thinking of how heavily AI developments are affecting the experiences of translators and interpreters around the world. Using language is a human experience. It shapes our individual and collective identities - something that AI bots don’t have. That’s why we advocate for responsible language technology.

In recent years, we’ve seen technology develop much faster than we could have ever imagined. Lots of decisions are being made without asking a basic question: will these approaches achieve better language inclusion and equal rights for everyone, regardless of the language they speak?

Humans are essential to language work. Not only do we need them to make sure that information is accurate, but language communities must be the ones leading the tech pathway so that tools are built to serve us equitably. These days, the world is coming to a collective understanding that we need to find better ways to develop technology. This can be the spark that we need to build a world that is more just.

September is world sexual health and reproductive health (SRHR) month.

Here is why these three considerations are essential:

1. Communities are often linguistically diverse and not everyone will speak or understand the official or majority languages. You will need to know which languages they speak, employ researchers who speak the same languages, and translate research tools into those languages.

2. Some words may imply judgement about the people or acts they do, which can be seen as offensive or not for certain groups to use.

3. SHRH can be hard to talk about and may use indirect terms that many may not understand. Research must be done to confirm the meaning of the terms used so it can be delivered to them correctly.

Researching on sexual and reproductive health and rights issues works best when language matters are taken into consideration as an essential element of the process.

🤔 What would the world map look like if it were based on the number of languages spoken in each region?

Promotion of the Equal Earth projection was recently adopted by the UN General Assembly. This new projection represents continent sizes more accurately and it particularly impacts the way Africa shows on the map.
