• The restoration work and new equipment were provided by Reel Custom Boat Works.

Hi Kokanee anglers and enthusiasts,

I’d like to invite you to participate in our egg collection efforts for inland salmon. Please read the duties descriptions and sign up using the link below.

Spawning operations will occur in the Little Truckee River upstream of Stampede Reservoir. They will be on Thursdays each week for 3 weeks and are expected to begin October 8. Actual dates will be dependent on fish numbers and ripeness, but the current, intended schedule is Oct 8, Oct 15, and Oct 22.

Collection site: work site is approximately 5,900’ in elevation; from the trailhead, it is a 2-mile road to the collection site requiring four-wheel drive and high clearance. We can carpool from the trailhead if needed.
Staffing needs: a volunteer agreement (provided) will need to be signed on site before starting operations
o Electrofishing: many people are needed per day to assist in the collection and delivery of fish from the river to the spawning stations.
§ Physical requirements: ability to wade in unstable rocky river environments; ability to walk over rough and uneven terrain; ability to repeatedly bend, lift, twist, and carry 40 pounds.
o Fish checks: 3 people are needed per day to assist in the checking of adipose fin clips and coded-wire tags of each kokanee.
§ Physical requirements: ability to walk over rough and uneven terrain; ability to bend, lift, and carry 25 pounds repeatedly; fewer physical requirements than electrofishing.
Time expectations: meet at 07:00 at the trailhead (link to google map), expect at least 5 hours of operations.
Gear: waders and wading boots required that are clean from aquatic invasive species; wear layers and sun protection; bring food and water. Rubber efishing gloves and fish handling gloves will be provided.
Weather: operations are conducted rain or shine. A waterproof outer layer is suggested because of the forecasted El Niño, but with all activities, there is still potential to overheat in the rain. Please dress accordingly.

Here are the winners of the Shaver MyCatch contest. We had a lot more participants this year in these derby pre-fish contests and hope to do it next year. The MyCatch by Angler's Atlas is a great app and it also can be used to track your path around the lake and record exactly where you caught the fish. Check it out and thanks to the team there that helps us set things up for the season.

And just like that the derby season is a wrap with Shaver in the books. Great turnout and lots of fish on the finders and scopes but they were pretty stubborn on derby day. At the upper end there were 17 inch fish up 1.62 lbs. Thanks to all that turned out. Here's the full results...

The blind bogey is determined by taking the average of the weight total highest score and the lowest score for the 3-Kokanee weigh in.  Here are the results:

We are doing another AnglersAtlas side event for the Shaver Lake derby to help capture some citizen science on the Kokanee population. This runs from the 9th (Wed) to the 13th (Sunday). KP Bucks for Shortest and Longest Kokanee and. Blind Bogey too. Just download the app, register and then take pictures of your Kokanee catches on a measuring board via the app. It's FREE!

Here are the Period 3 Winners for the Stampede Kokanee Research Project. It wa a short window designed around the derby week. We received 135 entries from anglers and in addition the DFW collected 34 entries on. KP boat. The DFW also measured and recorded all fish from the derby weigh-in. In the end a few adipose fin clipped fish were collected in the mix.
