Here we have our own Sandra Gray, who is now the Senior Director of the 518 Collective, along with Beverly Holmes who is donning a cool new cap with the 518 Collective logo on it. At our October 27 meeting, Sandra spoke to us about the 518 Collective, which is an agriculture technology (ag tech) business incubator and is operated by Carl Sandburg College. Sandra explained to us the function of a business incubator, which is a support program to help bridge the gap between concept and solution. She mentioned the downtown annex building, which has new signage in the windows and will be the primary facility for the 518 Collective. The 518 Collective is supported by a $1.8M state grant which will help renovate the first floor of the annex building. Sandra said that she spends a lot of her time meeting with people and making connections between stakeholders in the agriculture business.

At our October 20th meeting, we had three guests from Rotary District 6460. Shown (from left to right), are Mike Robson, District Treasurer, John Hauck, Assistant Governor, and Musonda Kapatamoyo, District Governor, along with our president, Mike DeSutter. John kindly agreed to give the invocation and Musonda was our program speaker. Musonda is a professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) and holds a PhD from Ohio University in Athens, OH, as well as an MBA in Business Analytics from SIUE. In his presentation, Musonda showed us an example of an elevator speech we could give when speaking to someone about our club and Rotary in general. He also mentioned the upcoming 125th anniversary of Rotary International, which will be in 2030. It was a very informative and inspiring presentation, and we are thankful that he, John, and Mike came to join us this morning.

At our October 13th meeting, Sandra Gray introduced our speaker, Stacey Rucker, who is Assistant Manager of Alumni Engagement & Advancement Communications at Carl Sandburg College. Stacey is a Carl Sandburg College graduate and also a Knox College graduate. She spoke to us about the Sandburg Foundation and how it helps students succeed through their educational journey. Stacey told us about the various scholarships which are available and that the Foundation has an annual scholarship reception and dinner where donors and scholarship recipients can meet up in person. She told us about four Foundation Grants that are available as well. Stacey shared with us about the Charger Center, which is now under construction and should be finished in 2027. She told us she is happy to give tours and encouraged people to come visit the campus and see the Science and Technology Center, the Student Center, and the 518 Collective.

At our October 6 meeting, we inducted Brandi Young, who is our newest club member. Welcome, Brandi! Also, eleven of the fourteen Knox County IL CEO (Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities) class of 2027 students came to our meeting to have breakfast with us. Thanks to Jeremy Kleine for bringing the CEO class and to Pam Perkins for arranging the seating so that we had students at each table. Jeremy and the CEO students then stepped in to present a program to us as our planned program could not take place. We are grateful to them for doing this. The students spoke about site visits, group projects, and their individual business projects too. It was very encouraging to see this group of confident and enthusiastic young people at our meeting and to hear what they had to say.

We had our "Down on the Farm" social at Purlee Farms this past Tuesday, September 29. Many thanks to Jim Purlee who was our gracious host for the event. Wil Azer brought some great food from 156 East Bar and Grill. The venue was excellent as always and the weather outstanding! Great fellowship too! A very nice evening, indeed.

We had our annual Ball Drop fundraiser event this past Saturday at Rotary Park. 850 tickets were purchased this year, so we had that many golf balls for the drop. We also had 34 event sponsors! Captain Nick Walters and Fireman Kyle Sampier, both of the GFD (Galesburg Fire Department), brought a ladder truck and helped out with the ball drop. Our sincere thanks to each of them and to the GFD for the use of the truck. We also had a couple of Stearman airplanes which flew overhead to add to the excitement! Our thanks to each of the pilots. Once the balls were dropped at the target, we measured the three closest balls and announced the prize winners. The 1st prize ($1000) went to Lori Kriegshauser. 2nd prize ($500) went to Diane Stickle and the 3rd prize ($250) went to Eric Leiber (owner of Leiber’s Boxcar Express). We raised about $10,000 which we will use to grant scholarships and to support local organizations and charities. Thanks to all our sponsors and all who bought tickets for your generous support!
