The biggest word in retail right now is omnichannel, which is the seamless integration of online and offline shopping. When omnichannel is done right, a customer can shop in her favorite store to find that perfect pair of winter boots while using her smartphone to read reviews and check whether the store across town has a black pair in her size. Omnichannel creates a frictionless world for demanding consumers. But for businesses, building that omnichannel network while also developing new products can be a challenge.

Today the Monmouth community had a ribbon-cutting for a new business called the Tin Cup. Mike and Janice Sheid started The Tin Cup as a home-based internet business last year and found quick success. As some of Monmouth’s downtown buildings began to undergo various improvements, they decided to make a move to a full-time storefront and start selling food and beverage as well as hard goods. After the business began preparing to open, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, which presented a unique challenge for small businesses and especially for a new startup. The company adapted to the situation by offering outdoor seating, table separation, and carry-out services. Small businesses are a critical component of Monmouth’s community, and we are happy to see a home-grown company expand into a brick and mortar store that provides a needed service to our residents.

History of Six County ESN

The Entrepreneurial Support Network (ESN) of West Central Illinois formed in 2008. As the group expanded, additional counties joined the group effectively forming the Six County ESN that includes partners from Henderson, Henry, Knox, Mercer, Stark and Warren Counties.

It has been said that one should “celebrate that which they want to see more of in a community.” By recognizing businesses through annual events such as Small Business Awards, the Six County Fast Pitch, and various networking opportunities throughout the counties, ESN hopes to see increased entrepreneurial activity in the six county region.

ESN partners are: Carl Sandburg College, City of Galva, First Mid Bank & Trust, Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Kewanee Economic Development Corporation, Knox County Area Partnership for Economic Development, Mercer County Better Together, Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce, University of Illinois Extension, Western Illinois University Small Business and Development Center, and Western Illinois Works.
