The HRFP is seeing a significant increase in the number of neighbors turning to us for food assistance.

In a new update, our Executive Director shares what's driving this growing needโ€”from the rising cost of living and layoffs impacting our region to recent changes in federal food assistance programsโ€”and what it means for the families we serve.

Last year, we assisted more than 40,000 individuals. Based on current trends, we're on track to serve nearly 50,000 this year.

We're responding by sourcing more food, purchasing more options and expanding partnerships, including with local farmers markets. But we can't do it alone.

We were selected as one of several local nonprofits to receive funding through the Amazon Prince William County community fund, a partnership between Amazon and the Prince William County Community Foundation.

We are so grateful for this money that will support access to food through our grocery-style self-select model, allowing clients to choose items that best fit their needs. This work helps expand reliable, dignified access to food and everyday essentials for local families.

Our volunteer of the quarter from Admin & Distribution is Raj! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š

"Rajitha 'Raj' Vongur is one of our best volunteers at the HRFP. She not only works food distribution 4-5 shifts per week, she volunteers for Admin once per week. Raj has become well known through the volunteer network at the pantry and also among the Leadership team. Raj always has a smile on her face and helps wherever she is needed. The clients adore her, and often will ask where she is when not at the pantry because they are so use to seeing her there is one capacity or another. Both the Admin and Food Distribution Team Supervisors can truly depend on Raj. She is a huge asset to the HRFP."

New blog alert!

Recently, HRFP was selected as one of several local nonprofits to receive funding through the Amazon Prince William County Community Fund, a partnership between Amazon and the Prince William County Community Foundation that supports projects across five key focus areas: health and wellness, food security, sustainability and environment; veterans and military services, and social cohesion.

To celebrate this milestone, and to share some insight into how nonprofit grants work, we sat down with our volunteer grant writer Joe Kittle. In this Q&A, he shares advice for other nonprofits on what makes a strong grant application, and why this particular opportunity with PWCCF was such a great fit for HRFP: https://haymarketfoodpantry.org/behind-the-grant-qa-with-hrfp-grant-writer-joe-kittle/

We have the best volunteers in the world! This quarter, weโ€™re spotlighting Phill and Fred from our inventory and receiving crew. Hereโ€™s what their supervisor had to say:

โ€œPhill and Fred have been volunteering at the pantry since 2015. They are a great asset to the pantry and to the team on Tuesday. I am very appreciative of all they do."
