Thought it was time for a little reintroduction…

We are Jonathan and Becca Gardner and it’s been almost 7 years since we started Windy Van Hooten Teaching Garden. Our hope for WVH was to build spaces where people could interact with nature and each other within Gadsden, AL. Community, education, and connection are the foundation and guiding compass of what we have been building through WVH.

As Gadsden natives, we saw the beautiful nature at our fingertips and the lack of opportunity for students and teachers to experiment and learn in their natural environment. Over the last seven years, we have built gardens and taught students K-5 at 8 city schools and counting, allowing students to engage their curiosity and explore the world in unique ways. We have also been developing a piece of land we call Hooten Holler (or The Holler) at the Episcopal Day Camp, where we can host events, workshops, and field trips for our community. Already we can see the profound effects that getting involved with nature and growing food has had on students and adults alike.
